Background

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Lead Midwife for Education working in the School of Nursing, Institute of Clinical Sciences at The University of Birmingham. The School is in a period of sustained growth and is now developing midwifery education as part of the programme portfolio and in line with substantial and related research programmes within the School of Nursing, the College of Medical and Dental Sciences and the University. It currently seeks a Lead Midwife for Education (LME) to lead the developments and implement a new MSc Midwifery programme, working in collaboration with clinical partners, Health Education England and regional stakeholders. The role holder will be responsible for the leadership of midwifery education at the University of Birmingham, delivering research informed midwifery programmes within the School of Nursing, and forming strategic and operational midwifery partnerships that have a sustained quality and benefit for student learning, student employability and for enterprise and knowledge transfer.

Job Summary

The LME will contribute at a senior level on a sustained basis to the whole range of teaching leadership and administration.

The role will include the development and leadership of regulated midwifery education at the University of Birmingham including acting as the named LME. The role will be responsible for driving a high quality student midwife experience, through a programme of blended learning that supports research intensive teaching, is employer informed and drives the development of highly employable graduates.

In the role of LME, you be responsible for leading an academic team that embraces innovation and aspires to be forward thinking in their approach to midwifery education. You will contribute to teaching and learning within the School as part of a team including the planning, implementation and evaluation of educational activities for Midwifery at both pre-registration and post graduate level, with practice placement responsibilities within the partnership placement providers across the West Midlands.

The role will make a significant leadership contribution within the School of Nursing being accountable for the advancement of midwifery education within the University of Birmingham. This will include forming a strong relationship with relevant School, College and University research programmes and partnerships with local and national service providers and educational and clinical networks, engaging in and influencing the policy, practice, and standards of midwifery. The role will provide leadership in developing innovative, blended approaches to teaching and learning, and will be expected to make significant contribution to local and national forums for midwifery education.

Management and administration will include subject leadership and management activity with University wide involvement that may include sustained high value impact knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement and similar activities that are of manifest benefit to the College and University.

Main Duties

This post is offered as a teaching only or teaching and research focused role.

Teaching focused Senior Lecturers will, as appropriate to the discipline:
  • Make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of midwifery that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research; and
  • Lead on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning that are innovative to midwifery and / or to the institution; and
  • Lead on the design and/or renewal of midwifery programmes or equivalent; and
  • Contribute to debate nationally about new approaches to midwifery policy, methods and practices through publications, conferences, and activities that advance quality in the field; and
  • Engage in external quality assurance activities related to teaching, eg. External examining, NMC visitor.


Teaching and Research focused Senior Lecturers will, as appropriate:
  • Make a major contribution to the management of midwifery research activities
  • Lead successful funding bids which develop and sustain research support for midwifery
  • Publish leading research that results in a sustained, highly respected reputation of international quality in the subject area and/or designing and developing innovative underpinning technologies
  • Provide expert advice internally and externally
  • Provide leadership of research that contributes to the progression of the discipline
  • Referee and peer review articles for peer reviewed academic journals and grant applications by research councils and/or other major funding bodies
  • Lead sustained high value impact activity in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) that is of manifest benefit to the College and University, and: a) makes a significant contribution to policy development at a national and international level; and/or b) involves development of industrial links and comparable networks and initiatives.


In addition, research responsibilities will include some but not necessarily all the indicative responsibilities from grade 8 listed below:
  • Supervise and examine PhD students, both within the institution and externally
  • Manage research activities and/or supervise other research staff
  • Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued


In addition, the SL Midwifery will
  • Play an important and sustained role in the recruitment and admission of students
  • Supervise, with a research focused or research and teaching-focused member of staff, doctoral students to completion; and
  • Undertake appropriate learning and teaching responsibilities, contributing at a senior level on a sustained basis in learning and teaching. This will include:
  • Leading the development of innovative and blended approaches to learning and teaching which are underpinned by research and evaluation of teaching methods and systems
  • Act as adviser for teaching and learning methods through excellent practice and mentoring other colleagues
  • Lead the design and/or co-ordination of midwifery programmes and contribute to nursing and other programmes across the School as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of teaching and learning policy more widely than the School
  • Contribute to debate nationally about policy, methods & practices through publications, conference activity and roles that advance quality in the discipline
  • Lead the development and management of midwifery assessment strategies within the School
  • Lead sustained high value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including external engagement that enhances the student experience and/or or employability, and is of manifest benefit to learning and teaching in the College and the University
  • Include in their learning and teaching responsibilities some but not necessarily all the indicative responsibilities from grade 8 level listed below.
  • Teach and examine midwifery, nursing and other professional health or subject related courses at a range of levels
  • Plan and review own teaching approaches and act as a mentor to encourage others to do the same
  • Develop programme proposals and make substantial contributions to the design of educational programmes more widely in the School, as appropriate
  • Undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining
  • Use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in midwifery and nursing
  • Disseminate appropriate practices through suitable media
  • Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.


The role holders teaching practice is informed by discipline based research and should participate actively in the research culture of the School.

Management/administration

Chair and/or lead midwifery and other given activities in the School and represent the School on College/ University committees or working groups. Where appropriate to the discipline, this is likely to include some
  • Make an important contribution to the development and running of the School of Nursing, leading midwifery education and any other delegated leadership activity
  • Develop and lead a team to deliver midwifery education, managing the team and resources
  • Make important contributions to the development of the School's learning and teaching strategy
  • Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with a focus on midwifery policy and practice
  • Develop and implements a culture (including policies and procedures) that promotes Equality and values diversity and inclusion

In addition, the management/administration responsibilities will include some but not necessarily all the indicative responsibilities from grade 8 listed below.

  • Contribute to the administration and management of education across the School
  • Lead a team to develop high quality, research intensive midwifery education
  • Contribute to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups).
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major research and/or teaching activities


Person Specification
  • Higher Degree relevant to midwifery or healthcare:
  • This will normally be a Doctoral qualification, but could include Master's degree with an appropriate level and range of senior midwifery and educational/ scholarship experience. Willingness to undertake a doctoral qualification where this is appropriate.Management and administration-related requirements
