Institute of Applied Health Research

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792

Grade 7

Full Time FTC until 28 February 2026


The post holder will be based in the newly-formed Centre of Economics of Obesity within the Health Economics Unit (HEU) in the Institute of Applied Health Research.

The Centre will promote development of methods and integration of economic evaluation into local and regional obesity policy and will generate evidence from five workstreams targeting the determinants of obesity across the retail, environment, transport, education and workplace. The Centre will liase closely with stakeholders across the West Midlands region including local government, retailers, education and transport providers and the third sector.

The Research Fellow will have responsibility for the economic analysis alongside the Green Space/Parks workstream. They will adopt an integrated partnership approach to develop methodology and conduct economic evaluations of park refurbishments across Birmingham City.

Job Summary
  • Work within the Green Space/Parks workstream collaborating closely with Birmingham City Council and the wider research team all working within the theme of 'Economics of Obesity Research'.
  • To help with identifying specific Green Space/Parks interventions; designing data collection tools; collecting research data; and undertaking both methodological and policy analysis.
  • To undertake the economic analysis within the Green Space/Parks workstream.
  • To contribute to writing reports for the stakeholders; disseminating research results at academic and policy-relevant meetings and contributing to academic publications, effective media, research seminars and meetings.

Main Duties
  • To work closely with Birmingham City Council with support from Prof E Frew, on developing a research plan and data collection tools.
  • To undertake the economic analysis within the Green Space/Parks workstream
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • To identify and exploit, with assistance from Prof Emma Frew any methodological research questions.
  • To contribute to the writing of Council-specific reports.
  • To disseminate the research findings using appropriate and effective media, including publication in leading journals, presentations at conferences, research seminars and meetings.
  • To support the wider Centre for Economics of Obesity Research-related activities and administration.
  • To provide support to colleagues and students on applied health economic techniques, particularly within obesity economics research.
  • To support the HEU teaching programme, particularly in relation to the Masters programme in Health Economics & Health Policy and Masters in Public Health Health Economics module.
  • To support any other appropriate activities that will help achieve the objectives of the Centre for Economics of Obesity Research and the wider Health Economics Unit.

Person Specification
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • MSc (or equivalent) in Health Economics.
  • High level knowledge of health economics and/or research methods and techniques to work within the Green Space/Parks workstream of the Economics of Obesity Research work programme.
  • Research experience and scholarship within health economics.
  • Ability to plan and organise the research programme that will fall within the Green Space/Parks workstream.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to work to fixed deadlines.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to be able to liase with non-academic stakeholders.
  • Fluency in economic evaluation methods.
