The Centre for Religion, Economy and Politics at the University of Basel welcomes applications for the position of doctoral researcher for the research project "Ecovillages as Incubators for Sustainability Transitions", beginning June 1, 2021. The research project will focus on the role of ecovillages in local sustainability transitions within different regional contexts. It explores under what conditions ecovillages diffuse sustainability innovations in their local social environment. The position is a 100%-position for four years. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jens Koehrsen, the project team will consist of a postdoctoral researcher, two Ph.D. students and at least one research assistant. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Your position
  • Undertake project tasks in close collaboration with other team members
  • Qualitative and quantitative methodologies and data analysis utilizing software programs (e.g. MAXQDA, SPSS)
  • Writing and revising empirical reports and research articles for leading journals in environmental studies
  • Organizing, supervising and conducting university courses and various events (e.g., workshops, penal discussions)
  • Write a doctoral thesis in the context of the project (monography or cumulative paper-based) and participate in mandatory courses for achieving PhD


Your profile
  • Master's degree (or a similar qualification) in sustainability research, sociology, human geography or a similar discipline
  • Understanding of sustainability research in the social sciences (e.g. final thesis and /or work experience in this field) as well as an interest in studying ecovillages
  • First experience in qualitative research methods and interest in quantitative methods
  • Very good written and spoken English language skills (C1 or higher). German and Spanish are an advantage, but not required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Willingness to live and work in different locations on the globe
  • Motivation to write and complete a doctoral dissertation
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural and social skills
