Laboratory Technician

Employer
University of Basel
Location
Basel, Switzerland
Closing date

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. A total of 30 research groups and 500 employees investigate how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

The van Nimwegen lab at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel is looking for a Laboratory technician to contribute to work in the wet lab.

The focus of the wet lab of the van Nimwegen group is the functioning and evolution of gene regulation at the single cell level in bacteria. We use a combination of approaches including microfluidics in combination with time-lapse microscopy, flow cytometry, and in-lab evolution. A unique feature of the lab is its strong interaction with theoreticians, with many members having backgrounds in physics or other quantitative fields. Experimental approaches pursued in the lab are almost entirely motivated by theoretical questions, involve sophisticated quantitative techniques, and are integrated with cutting-edge theoretical modeling of the data. It is essential that the candidate feels at home and is motivated in this lab culture.

Your position

Apart from general tasks such as ordering, equipment maintenance, and assistance with experimental work, you are expected to pursue your own experiments under the supervision of senior researchers in the lab, and to contribute generally to the research in the lab. We are thus seeking somebody that resonates with the scientific questions and approaches taken in the lab. Main responsibilities include:
  • Microbiology including lab automation tools such as multichannel pipette, plate handling robot, etc.
  • Molecular biology (cloning, library prep, bacterial genetics in particular chromosomal integration)
  • Design of genomic modifications (e.g. restriction / ligation, Gibson, Golden Gate, site-directed mutagenesis)
  • Basic computational analysis of experimental data (import into software, filtering, basic plotting of growth curves, titration assays and such)
  • Samples and stocks management
  • Lab data management
  • Managing the maintenance of lab equipment

Your profile

You have a "Laborant/in" degree or a Bachelor/Master degree in Biology or related topics.
The following skills are highly desired and you are expected to possess at least one of these:
  • Programming basic scripts for data analysis (preferably in R or python)
  • Quantitative fluorescence microscopy
  • Microfluidics

We offer you

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to contribute to a vibrant international research community.

The initial contract will be for one year with the possibility for extension.
