The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton invites applications for a Lectureship post from candidates with a substantive interest in demography, global health or other aspects of social research, expertise in applied social research methods, and a commitment to excellence in research and teaching.

Applications are welcome from outstanding candidates with expertise in their substantive area, and experience of applied quantitative research methods, including statistical modelling and inference, demographic or epidemiological methods, and other health or social research methods. The post holder must have a PhD or an equivalent qualification in a relevant area, with a strong analytical focus, and be able to satisfy all the essential criteria detailed in the job description. Applications will be particularly welcome from candidates with expertise in demography, global health, applied health or social research, or similar areas.

The post-holder will be required to contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Social Statistics and Demography and other students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, including in the areas of quantitative research methods, depending on their skills and experience and the particular needs of the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate, develop and deliver a range of teaching modules; to contribute to our undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes in demography, social statistics and research methods; to contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students, and to carry out administrative duties within the Department and the wider Faculty of Social Sciences.

The successful candidate will be additionally expected to engage in advanced study and research, including the publication of research results in peer-reviewed international journals, and demonstrate leadership in seeking research funding. The post-holder should be able to demonstrate a strong, REF-quality, research portfolio, and will be also expected to start contributing to research income generation and enterprise activities.

The post is available on a full-time basis and the successful candidate will be expected to start no later than 1 September 2021 (a later start date is non-negotiable).

The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at Southampton has world class research expertise in demography, statistical modelling, survey methodology, official statistics, global health and social policy, and takes a strategic role in the development and promotion of the use of quantitative methods in the social sciences. The members of the Department contribute significantly to the research activities at the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), the ESRC Centre for Population Change, National Centre for Research Methods, and the Centre for Global Health and Policy.
