The Marine Microphycology Lab couples cell physiology and biochemistry, to investigate cellular processes and biochemical adaptations in microalgae in response to environmental change. We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level B) to join our team. In this position, the incumbent will be responsible for carrying out experimental work as part of a recently funded Australian Research Council Grant Diatom silica production under future ocean conditions, genes to biomes, which is focused on integrating physiological, biochemical, molecular and modelling approaches to better understand the implications of ocean acidification and warming on diatom silica production.

Specifically, the incumbent will utilise their expertise in microbiology, microscopy and data processing to support ship-board and laboratory-based experiments to contribute to the goals of the project. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing extensive logistical, supervisory and laboratory managerial support to the Marine Microphycology Lab at UTS.

The successful applicant will have:
  • PhD in microbiology, phytoplankton physiology or related research
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of fluorescence microscopy techniques and image processing
  • Extensive hands-on experience in microbiological approaches (culturing and isolation of phytoplankton, physiological assessment including PAM fluorometry, oxygen productivity, cell viability using flourescent dyes, etc.),
    Knowledge and experience in Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy
  • Experience in molecular (omics) and environmental chemistry approaches
  • Excellent quantitative skills and capacity for analysing, interpreting and integrating complex datasets using R
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills to resolve issues to expedite research
  • Demonstrated experience supervising students (Honours and HDR)

  • This role also attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
  • This position is part time (0.6FTE) and appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for 3 years (36 months).
