We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to work on a multidisciplinary project aiming to develop a set of tools to estimate myocardial blood flow and extracellular volume using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. This full-time British Heart Foundation-funded position is available for a fixed term of 3 years.

You will be based with scientists and clinicians in the Department of Biomedical Imaging Science at the University of Leeds and will work in collaboration with clinicians and scientists in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). The project involves the development of computational tools to simulate the effect of contrast agent transport and water exchange on MRI data acquired in the myocardium. Subsequently you will be involved in the imaging of patients before and after aortic valve surgery and the analysis of the MRI data acquired.

Contrast-enhanced (CE) MRI has expanding guideline indications in several forms of heart disease but, using current methods, the data obtained are compromised by limited water exchange (WX) between cardiomyocytes and the extracellular volume. This can lead to underestimates of 30% in measures of pathological extracellular volume expansion, potentially leading to incorrect patient diagnosis and management.

We hypothesise that better understanding of the interplay between the movement of water and contrast agent and their effect on the measured MRI signal is imperative for wider use of CE-MRI. By developing the tools to thoroughly understand these effects we will be able to characterise the myocardium more quickly and accurately.

In this project three objectives will be pursued. We will, (a) develop a framework (a set of models and computational tools) to understand the combined effects of WX and contrast agent kinetics on CE-MRI of the myocardium; (b) test the sensitivity of the framework in patients with aortic stenosis; (c) validate the framework against reference standard measurements.

This will allow us to simultaneously measure myocardial blood flow, extracellular volume and cardiomyocyte size using an optimised DCE-MRI study which will produce estimates of extracellular volume that are more accurate than current methods.

The principal investigator and line manager of the appointed Research Fellow is Prof David Buckley, an MRI physicist at the University of Leeds. The co-investigators are Dr Eylem Levelt and Prof Sven Plein, both cardiologists with joint appointments at the University of Leeds and LTHT and Dr John Biglands, an NHS MRI physicist at LTHT.
