Background

Birmingham International Academy (BIA) provides pre-sessional and in-sessional programmes in Academic English and Skills for international students at the University of Birmingham. The BIA also provides EAP and Academic Skills modules for Foundation Pathway programmes which are delivered in collaboration with the Colleges. BIA sits within Academic Services and has a strong international profile. The teaching is research-informed and staff are encouraged to take part in relevant conferences and CPD training sessions.

Summary of Role

Birmingham International Academy (BIA) oversees the delivery of International Foundation, pre-sessional and insessional (Academic English) programmes across Edgbaston and Dubai campuses.

Reporting to the Dubai Provost with a dotted line to the UK BIA Director of English for Academic Purposes, the post holder will lead on the development and delivery of all EAP programmes on the Dubai campus. This includes EAP modules for the International Foundation Programmes and Academic English support for all existing undergraduate and postgraduate students. Over time we expect to offer presessional English programmes on the Dubai campus which the post holder will also oversee.

This is a new role and an exciting opportunity to drive innovation and growth in our current portfolio of programmes and contribute to the next phase in the development of the Dubai campus. The post holder will initially be expected to manage a teaching load as part of the role and will also be responsible for line managing EAP staff in Dubai. The post holder will form part of the wider academic management team within the BIA, working closely with UK based Programme Managers to ensure Dubai programmes meet the high standards set whilst ensuring they are fit for purpose in the context of the Dubai operation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In relation to strategy, leadership and management

Lead on development and delivery of EAP Foundation programmes and Academic English provision in Dubai. Work closely with Edgbaston counterparts to ensure consistency of delivery.

Work closely with Foundation Academic Director to ensure EAP provision integrates well into subject specific programmes, identifying any local needs that require specific intervention.

Liaise with Dubai Provost and College Academic leads to determine scope and delivery options of Academic English provision, ensuring this meets the needs of students and their attainment. Deploy/Adapt existing content or develop new programmes to meet these needs. Ensure delivery plans are achievable with agreed resources.

Evaluate opportunities to deliver presessional programmes on the Dubai campus. Develop delivery plan and implement in collaboration with Dubai education team and BIA.

As part of the BIA's academic management team, contribute to strategic direction for the development and delivery of all BIA programmes.

Identify and exploit strategic opportunities for development of products and services both on campus and overseas.

Manage and support a team of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tutors

Develop and monitor quality systems for the activities of the BIA working closely with the UK Director of EAP and Director of Operations and Development.

Work collaboratively with colleagues across the BIA to ensure a coordinated approach to the delivery and management of BIA programmes.

Work closely with colleagues across Professional Services in Dubai to ensure awareness of and alignment with all skills support for students and the Internationalisation agenda generally.

Represent the BIA on University committees as necessary.

In relation to teaching

To plan and prepare own teaching, including materials, handouts and use of VLE in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programmes

To deliver teaching flexibly where required within a classroom environment or remotely as required using the LMS and video conference technology.

To contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues.

In relation to innovation and development

Analyse the changing environment with regards to alternative modes of delivery (including technology enhanced learning) for Academic English tuition and support and contribute to strategy development.

Development of innovative and relevant materials, assessment and testing in line with the University's strategic developments in technology enhanced learning.

Work collaboratively within the BIA and across the University to offer advice and support for innovative delivery supporting students in Dubai, UK and overseas.

In relation to managing resources and performance

Demonstrate an understanding of the financial regime of the University and actively manage resources including recruitment of staff and work within financial regulations and budgets set.

Facilitate change in the BIA to ensure that delivery of the service is managed and organised in a transparent manner communicating clear performance expectations.

Develop self and mentoring and coaching the team ensuring professional development matches the needs of the BIA.

Develop and implement systems to ensure that management, organisation and delivery of the service is consistent, quality controls in place and adequate cover provided.

Work collaboratively with Marketing & Recruitment to ensure that programmes are marketed in an appropriate and accurate manner in line with UoB guidelines.

Contribute to the annual review and reporting process for your programmes and ensure that all necessary actions and responses are undertaken.

Work closely with professional services teams to ensure that administrative support meets the needs of the service delivery and that all regulatory compliance are met.

Develop and maintain links with professional organisations and accrediting bodies and with colleagues in other appropriate HEIs, sharing intelligence and developing best practice in relation to Academic English Language and Skills delivery as appropriate.

Develop and maintain links with allocated College(s) to build relationships and ensure the needs of the College(s) are met through appropriate provision.

Undertake any other duties as agreed by the Dubai Provost and BIA Director of English for Academic Purposes

Person Specification
  • Educated to at least degree level and have significant relevant experience such that the tasks outlined in the job description can be carried out effectively
  • A British Council-recognised qualification at the appropriate specialist level, i.e. MA in a TEFL/TESL/ELT-related area and/or A DELTA/Trinity Licentiate Diploma TESOL.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others successfully at all levels.


Teaching
  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability


Management Administration
  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action
