Background

We are looking to appoint an experienced Planner to lead our MSc in Urban Planning, to be launched in September 2021, at our Dubai campus. The role will involve taking a lead in setting up and launching the programme in addition to ensuring its successful delivery and further growth and development. The programme will be international in its focus and we are looking for an academic who has experience of research and teaching on the key issues that urban regions face in a diverse range of cities.

The successful applicant must be able to lead modules on Urban Design and Smart Cities and contribute to modules around Sustainable Cities and Green and Healthy Cities. They must have experience of post-graduate dissertation supervision and be able to demonstrate teaching innovation both in classroom and field-based teaching. Given that the programme is soon to be launched, the post-holder will also be expected to lead on building long term linkages with relevant local authorities and planning firms in the region.

The MSc Urban Planning will have significant linkages with the highly successful RTPI accredited Planning MSc that is currently delivered on our Birmingham campus as well as the broader Geography and Environmental Sciences programmes. As part of this, the applicant would be expected to draw on the School's world-leading interdisciplinary research and teaching, such as Atmospheric Pollution and Water, in order to embed key elements within our Planning education delivery.

Role Summary

The key responsibilities are to develop and deliver the Dubai based post-graduate programme in Urban Planning and contribute at a senior level to the range of associated teaching leadership and administration tasks.

Educational responsibilities will include:
  • development and leadership of the teaching programmes; and
  • enhancement of the student experience and employability;
  • development of links with the Dubai planning community to enable practitioner contributions to the programmes and to open up potential research projects for students.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to the advancement of educational delivery in the subject area (e.g. involving policy, practice, standards), and provide leadership in teaching and learning that is innovative and cognizant of relevant national and international debates.

Management and administration will initially involve managing activity on the Dubai campus, although the activity will also involve extensive collaboration with colleagues based at our Edgbaston Campus.

Main duties

The successful candidate will:
  • play an important and sustained role in the recruitment and admission of students;
  • contribute at a senior level and on a sustained basis in areas of learning and teaching. This will include:
  • leading the development of appropriate approaches to learning and teaching.
  • acting as adviser for teaching and learning methods through excellent practice and the mentoring other colleagues
  • leading the design and/or co-ordination of programmes or equivalent activities across the School
  • contributing to the development of teaching and learning policy more widely than the School
  • contributing to debate nationally about policy, methods & practices through publications, conference activity and roles that advance quality in the discipline
  • leading the development and management of assessment strategies within the School
  • leading sustained high value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) that enhances the student experience and/or or employability, and is of manifest benefit to learning and teaching in the College and the University
  • include in their learning and teaching responsibilities some of the following as agreed:
  • teaching and examining courses at a range of levels
  • planning and reviewing own teaching approaches and acting as a mentor to encourage others to do the same
  • developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely in the Department or School, as appropriate
  • undertaking and developing a full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining
  • using appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field
  • developing and advising other on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
  • make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research;
  • contribute to debate nationally about new approaches to policy, methods and practices through publications, conferences, and activities that advance quality in the field;
  • engage in external quality assurance activities related to teaching, eg. External examining.

Management/administration
  • Lead activities in the School and represent the School on College/ University committees or working groups. This will include some but not all of the responsibilities listed below.
  • Make an important contribution to the development and running of School, for example, leading activity on teaching assessment.
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of teaching activities
  • Make important contributions to the development of the School's and/or learning and teaching strategy
  • Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with sustained high value impact of manifest benefit to the College and the University
  • Contribute to the administration/management of teaching across the Department/School
  • Lead/project manage a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive)
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major teaching activities

Skills and experience required

Good first degree and a PhD in a relevant subject area

Demonstrated excellence in Learning and Teaching, and Management and administration.

Learning and teaching requirements

An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality.

Teaching quality demonstrated to be informed by an appropriate level of scholarship.
  • Excellent reputation for the development of teaching and learning excellence within the discipline
  • Successful and sustained use of a range of appropriate teaching methods, and assessment strategies that promote high quality learning, including learning that is flexible, distinctive and current and stimulates learners' natural curiosity.
  • Significant and sustained contribution to one or more of the following: strategic development of new programmes, approaches to learning, the development of learning resources.
  • High quality and sustained contributions to fostering excellence in teaching activities more widely, i.e. in the Department/School or College and/or externally.
  • Mentoring and expert advice which develops the skills of colleagues in teaching and in fostering learning
  • Sustained high value impact knowledge transfer and enterprise that is of manifest benefit to the College and University.

Management and administration-related requirements

Demonstrated significant achievement in management and administration-related activities, which may include leadership of activities/initiatives.
  • Successful and sustained performance in significant administrative/managerial role (s) (e.g. exams officer).
  • Significant and sustained high quality innovative contributions to the management/administration of the Department/School/College or University.
  • Successful and sustained contribution to the corporate life of the School/College/University, displaying willingness to contribute actively to committees, collaborative teaching and administrative tasks.

Planning, Organising and Decision Making
  • Involved in strategic planning that impacts over a number of years and contribute to the Institution's planning process
  • Lead on development and management of assessment strategies
  • Project Management
  • Plan and deliver high quality teaching results
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major teaching activities
  • Significant contribution to the development of the School/College's learning and teaching strategy.

  • Represent the School on College/University Committees or working groups

Internal/external relationships
  • Lead and develop internal and external networks e.g. by chairing and participating in appropriate Committees.
  • Develop links with external contacts (such as businesses, other educational bodies, public sector organisations, organisations with public engagement opportunities), to facilitate knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, enhancement of the student experience or employability.
  • Provide expert advice internally and externally.
  • Contribute to and lead on national debates through publications, conference activity and roles that advance teaching and learning of the discipline.
  • Play an active role in appropriate professional bodies.
  • Act as external examiner
