The Department of Production Animal Studies seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing dairy and udder health management. This person will focus on the teaching, providing services and research in Dairy and Udder health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students (including special emphasis on dairy and udder health);
  • Providing clinical and laboratory services to current and new clientele including assisting at Production Animal Clinic (OVAH);
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement - participation and supporting student activities;
  • The successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional clientele to fulfil this mandate;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Academic self-development.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Must have MSc degree in ruminant health and production or veterinary science (if the latter then with a relevant production animal focus), or must be registered currently for such an MSc and able to graduate in 2021;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
  • Two years' veterinary experience post CCS year in predominantly dairy herd health and evidence of exposure to udder health management (Case log required); and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.


Senior Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification in Ruminant medicine or Ruminant medicine and Herd health;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in a relevant field;
  • Five years' veterinary experience with at least two years' experience in predominantly dairy herd health and evidence of exposure to udder health management (case log); and
  • At least one full peer reviewed paper in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.

Or
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • MSc degree with particular focus on production animals;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
  • Five years' veterinary experience with at least two years' experience in predominantly in predominantly dairy herd health and evidence of exposure to udder health management (case log); and
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work;
  • Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Experience in dairy herd health and udder health;
  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. software;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
  • Involvement in research in an appropriate field.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
