Applications are invited for one 36 month fixed term Research Fellow in Pure Mathematics, under the EPSRC project EP/V002899/1 Boundary representation of non-positively curved groups, to start on 1 July 2021.

The successful candidate should have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification in Pure Mathematics along with research experience in Geometric Group Theory and/or in Functional Analysis/Non-commutative Geometry, ideally specializing in one or more of the following: CAT(0) cube complexes, boundaries of non-positively curved spaces, representations of Lie groups, Baum-Connes conjecture.

The project entails constructing families of uniformly bounded representations of discrete groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes, and/or hyperbolic groups, using their action on the boundary. The work is related to understanding the representation theory that is relevant for the Baum-Connes conjecture.

The Pure Mathematics Group at Southampton offers a welcoming, stimulating and active research environment. Further information about Mathematics at Southampton can be found at http://www.soton.ac.uk/maths/

The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to promoting equality and diversity, and holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrating this commitment. Informal inquiries can be made at any time to project leader, Dr Jan Spakula, jan.spakula@soton.ac.uk .

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered also from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
