The role

We are looking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic health services researcher to support an early-stage scoping project in the field of urgent care. Specifically, the project will be looking at how General Practitioners (GPs) are working with ambulance services to meet the needs of emergency callers, and how outcomes can be evaluated. The project will be building upon the team's growing portfolio of urgent care system, policy and workforce evaluations, and aims to begin mapping the current models of delivery to more accurately define research questions and approaches for follow-on funding. This will be a fast-paced and dynamic scoping project that will suit applicants experienced in scoping, realist and mapping methodologies in a health context.

This is a part-time (50% time) post, initially funded for 9 months. For the right applicant, we are happy to accommodate a very flexible working arrangement that meets the needs of the project and the post-holder.

You will be based at the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol, working with Dr Matthew Booker and colleagues with interests in urgent and unscheduled healthcare. The project sits within the portfolio of work undertaken by the REACH Collaboration (Research in Emergency Care, Avon Collaborative Hub), which capitalises on the multi-disciplinary strengths and expertise of the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The collaboration has a number of active projects in the field, including a number of prestigious NIHR funding awards.

What will you be doing?

You will have the opportunity to be a key player in delivering the scoping project. This will include focussed work with the relevant academic literature, supporting the approvals process for pilot/scoping fieldwork at one or more NHS sites, conducting and analysing stakeholder interviews/pilot qualitative field work, and working with sample routine healthcare datasets to explore approaches to refine research questions for follow-on funded work. It is anticipated that you would be keen to take the lead on at least one output from this scoping work. Much of this work is likely to be conducted remotely, however some site visits (as current pandemic constraints permit) should be anticipated.

You should apply if

• You have a strong background in qualitative and/or mixed methods applied to health services research;

• You hold a higher degree in health sciences, social sciences or related discipline,

• You have knowledge and experience of the research approvals process for work taking place in NHS settings;

• You have experience of writing for publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals;

• You have knowledge of how primary care, urgency care, emergency care or related services operate in the UK. Experience of research in one these settings is particularly welcome;

• You have experience of the use of qualitative and mixed-methods 'in the field' - particularly undertaking and analysing interviews, focus groups and questionnaire data involving health services staff;

• You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

• You have experience of working with stakeholders and of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE)

• You have experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team.

Interviews will be held week commencing 26th April 2021.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
