This position is funded through the NERC SHEAR and Future Climates for Africa programmes and is to undertake work on the Improving Preparedness to Agro-Climatic Extremes in Malawi (IPACE-Malawi) and Uncertainty Reduction in Models for Understanding Development Applications (UMFULA) projects, at the University of Leeds. These projects are investigating critical climate thresholds for and impacts on agricultural systems and contributing to co-production of agricultural climate information.
The Research Fellow will contribute to the design and delivery of knowledge synthesis and dissemination work across these projects in collaboration with project partners (Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the 510 data initiative of the Netherlands Red Cross, the Malawi Red Cross Society, and the Met Office). There will be a strong emphasis on the sharing of lessons learnt on the co-production of agricultural science (including in soil science and agronomy) and climate services. The research fellow will also have an active role in translating this work into educational resources and capacity building activities, as well as in planning and developing proposals for follow on research.
The post holder will work as part of an interdisciplinary project team, including close collaboration with the Netherlands Red Cross, in The Hague, embedded with the 510 data initiative team and the Malawi Department for Climate Change and Meteorological Services, and will engage with teams from related projects, from the wider SHEAR and FCFA programmes, and the GCRF-AFRICAP programme.
There will be an opportunity for a 2-3 week visit to Malawi to work with the Malawi Department for Climate Change and Meteorological Services to contribute to the development and evaluation of the seasonal climate service communications, Covid-19 and travel restrictions permitting.
