The University of Leeds is one of the largest, most prestigious and diverse research-intensive universities in the UK. We achieved Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, we were the Sunday Times University of the Year 2017, and we are in the world's top 100 universities in the QS rankings and in the UK's top 10 for research power and impact. These successes are supported by an outstanding community of staff and students, a world-class campus and a strong financial position. The University also plays a key role at the heart of one of the UK's most economically vibrant and compassionate cities, and takes its economic, social, environmental and cultural responsibilities very seriously.

Under the leadership of our recently appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simone Buitendijk, we have launched our new University Strategy 2020-2030: Universal Values, Global Change . Under this blueprint for a values-driven university, we will harness our expertise in research and education to help shape a better future for humanity, working through collaboration to tackle inequalities, achieve societal impact and drive change in genuinely distinctive and transformational ways.

To help realise this exciting ambition we are now seeking to appoint a new University Secretary. A key member of the University Executive, this critical leadership role will take the lead on all matters relating to legal, compliance and risk, including health and safety, as well as all aspects of the Communications portfolio. Working closely with both the University Council and Executive colleagues they will be central to the development of institutional strategy and policy, ensuring we remain at the forefront of delivering effective governance that enhances our organisational performance.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven track record of providing high level strategic advice to a range of senior stakeholders. Politically astute, they will be well used to working in a rapidly changing, policy-driven environment and bring an in-depth understanding of the global higher education arena (and its underpinning statutory, regulatory and accountability frameworks). Outstanding communication skills, excellent judgement and the ability to maintain and develop productive relationships with varied internal and external audiences will also be vital.
