What You Will Achieve

As a Scientist in the Molecular Biology team embedded in Bacterial Vaccines and Technology, you will be at the center of our operations and you'll find that everything we do, every day, is in line with an unwavering commitment to quality. You will be part of a team that is addressing the critical task of rejuvenating our pipeline with innovative and critical vaccine programs in the years to come. The Molecular Biology team plays a key role in early antigen development for vaccines and assay development: focusing on cloning, expression, purification and preliminary antigen characterization as well as addressing research questions critical to progression of vaccine programs. With your deep knowledge in molecular biology, bacterial and viral pathogens, you will be an active team member who influences at the project team level. You will be using your scientific judgment to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience and consulting others. Your ability to plan will help in preparing short-term work activities on projects. Your creativity in developing novel processes and new ideas will be used frequently. You will undertake mentoring activities to guide your team members.

  • Comply with all safety training and good laboratory practices


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • B.S./M.S. degree (NOTE: non-Ph.D.) in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of research experience post-graduation
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with plasmid cloning and protein expression in E. coli
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bacterial and viral pathogens including genetic knockout construction
  • Ability to work independently on molecular biology and protein expression projects
  • Proficiency in general microbiology and molecular biology techniques (Nucleic acid extraction and handling, PCR, Gibson assembly, restriction enzyme-based cloning, DNA sequencing)
  • Proficient in the design and construction of complex plasmid or viral vectors
  • Experienced user of cloning software (Vector NTI, DNAStar, Geneious)
  • Demonstrated skills in bacterial or viral protein expression systems ( E. coli, mammalian cell handling and transfections, baculovirus / insect cell expression systems, Pichia pastoris )
  • Competent in protein analysis (SDS-PAGE, Western blot, quantitation by UV or colorimetric methods)
  • Hands-on skills in small scale protein purification approaches (e.g. nickel or GST affinity purification)
  • Ability to troubleshoot cloning, expression or purification challenges
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team, strong motivation with a dedicated work ethic
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relevant scientific software, including graphing/statistical analysis tools is expected
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Nice-to-Have
  • Hands-on experience with ÄKTA purification systems
  • Familiarity with Octet Bio-Layer Interferometry and/or ELISA assays
  • Experience with RNA isolation, qRT-PCR and qPCR assay design and development
  • Experience with Illumina sequencing platforms and data analysis
