As part of the Cellular, Genomic, and Protein Sciences (CGPS) group within Discovery Sciences, this individual will apply their expertise in the design, expression, purification, and characterization of proteins to support target discovery and validation, hit-ID approaches, mechanistic and biophysical studies, and structural biology efforts. The successful candidate will combine strong technical/scientific rigor and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to energize and lead high-performing teams, to drive impact across multiple early drug discovery programs.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will join a team of scientists within the larger Discovery Sciences Department that is responsible for a range of functions that underpin and drive the early drug discovery portfolio. This individual will collaborate across multiple groups and will leverage their extensive experience in protein construct design, expression, purification and characterization to produce fit-for-purpose protein reagents to support mechanistic studies, assays, and structural biology efforts.

The Successful Candidate will be Expected to:
  • Oversee all aspects of protein reagent design, and delivery to portfolio project needs.
  • Prioritize and assign resource across multiple projects to meet project timelines.
  • Lead, energize, and develop a team of individuals at varying career stages, to drive maximal impact in the area of protein sciences.
  • Collaborate closely across multiple partner lines and research Units to influence program strategy, MoA insights, and problem solving at the project level.
  • Work with CROs that provide external gene synthesis, protein expression and purification, to optimally balance internal and external resources towards portfolio objectives.
  • Drive the development and implementation of new technologies, methods and/or workflows to enhance efficiencies and advance capabilities in the area of protein science.
  • Promote Pfizer's capabilities and reputation through external publications and presentations.
  • Maintain up to date electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accordance with Pfizer policy.
  • Comply with all safety training and good laboratory practices.
  • Be highly motivated, highly organized and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Clear ability to work effectively in a matrixed, team-oriented environment.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or related discipline with 7+ years or M.S. with 10+ years post-degree experience including industry experience
  • Experience overseeing all aspects of protein reagent design, expression, purification, and characterization in a drug discovery setting. This includes:
    • Experience in expression of recombinant proteins using a variety of expression systems (bacteria, SF9, Expi293, CHO).
    • Expert in basic molecular biology methods and construct design to tailor protein for intended use(s).
    • A strong background in AKTA/NGS purification systems, and a variety of chromatographic techniques, including IEX, HIC, SEC, and Affinity,
    • Proficiency in the use of analytical and biophysical methods (HPLC, DLS, DSF, etc.) to assess protein stability, solubility, and form.
    • Experience providing high-quality protein reagents for various downstream efforts ranging from mechanistic studies, to traditional HTS assays, DEL and ASMS screens, biophysical assays, and structure-based efforts (X-Ray, Cryo-EM, NMR).
    • Experience working with challenging proteins, multi-protein complexes, soluble, and membrane proteins.
    • Experience using specialized purification strategies such as HIC and protein refolding.
    • Familiarity with display workflows (phage, yeast, or mammalian) to apply protein evolution methods where appropriate.
  • Proven ability to lead, energize and develop a high-performing team of scientists.
  • Demonstrated examples of strong scientific leadership, independent thought and creativity, and ability to integrally contribute to program strategies and execute plans.
  • Experience successfully interacting with and meeting the needs of stakeholder groups is essential as well as having a customer focus.
