In this role you will lead a matrix team comprised of members from within the Research Units (RU) and the functional lines and platform groups needed to support the project. As the single point of accountability for the project, you are expected to understand drug discovery project progression, a comprehensive grasp of the clinical development needs and timelines, and the competitive landscape. Excellent communication, organization, delegation, and presentation skills are essential to this role as you are expected to communicate the vision, strategy and supporting data for all work within the project and effectively communicate timelines and progress to all levels of the organization.

In this role, you will have management and oversight responsibility for a given target(s) from Target Identification through Candidate Selection governance. In the target identification space, you will work with a biology lead, biopharmaceutical discovery and MST colleagues to put forth a rationale for disease indication and identify a concise target validation plan to support acceptance at Early Discovery Forum. Upon completion of target validation, you will lead the team to define a drug discovery strategy, project plan including resource requirements, timelines and inflection points, and take the project through the C2T governance meeting. Working with the matrix team, post commit to target, you will be responsible for defining and executing the hit/lead id strategy. Upon identification of hit/lead series or feasible large molecule strategy, you are responsible for defining a path to a candidate, in collaboration with functional area leaders, will manage drug discovery activities consisting of lead optimization, competitive intelligence, translational studies, pharmacology, biomarker, safety, CMC and early clinical planning in preparation for Candidate Selection governance approval. You are responsible for establishing the decision / inflection points that enable data driven project decision-making, such as options to accelerate or to stop progression, depending on the data and evidence generated, and including scenario planning to anticipate and plan for different development pathways considering emerging competitive landscape. In parallel with these workstreams, you will meet regularly with the Head of Project Leader group and Research Unit Head to update them on changes to objectives, timelines, and strategy for each target in their domain. You will also be required to present to senior management (e.g., Head of Research) and relevant internal governance committees (e.g., Research Review Board) or external Advisory Committees (e.g., Scientific Advisory Board) as needed.
