Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director will lead campus-wide stakeholders in developing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to improving student health and wellbeing by forming partnerships and supervising specialists for mental health promotion, violence prevention and sexual health, alcohol and other drug use, and general well-being. The Director will provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for new and existing programs and develop and coordinate a wellness continuous improvement program focused on the first four areas identified by the Ottowa Health Promotion Charter (and endorsed by the American College Health Association and CAS Standards) to comprise an effective health promotion plan:contribute to healthy policiescreate and maintain supportive environmentsstrengthen community actiondevelop personal skillsTheir work and that of their supervisees should contribute to a healthy campus community that actively encourages and supports all students to learn and grow academically, socially and emotionally to maximize participation in Middlebury's selective, residential community and globally located Schools and Programs. The Director works to ensure that they and all health educators in Health and Wellness Education engage in relationship building, data disaggregation, and direct programming to address connections between culture, identiti(es), and social justice as determinants of health for groups of students who have been historically underrepresented or marginalized including but not limited to students of color, first generation students, and queer students.The Director of Health and Wellness Education is a twelve-month, full-time position supervising an Assistant Director and Mental Health Specialist, Alcohol and Other Drug Specialist, Violence Prevention and Advocacy Specialist, and Operations Coordinator. Supervision is provided by the Vice President for Student Affairs and indirect oversight is provided by the Title IX Coordinator for relevant programs and initiatives. Health and Wellness Education provides services, support, and consultation as an anchor office for all of Middlebury's year-round, world-wide programs.*Essential Functions:** Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.*Supervise and contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of overall office programming, education/trainings, and outreach efforts around health and wellness topics of community relevance including, but not limited to substance use, stress management, nutrition, healthy relationships and sexual health, and sleepApply extensive knowledge of program cycle (assessment, program planning, implementation, and evaluation) to support changes at multiple individual and population levelsApply extensive knowledge of research methods (survey design, environmental scans, and other qualitative/quantitative data collection methods) to assess community need and inform and continuous quality improvement processes that translate assessment results into actionDevelop strategic plans to address health issues at all levels of the socio-ecological model (intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community and public policy) and develop measurable goals and objectivesProvide expert consultation on areas of health promotion and prevention to campus constituentsEnsure the implementation of all alcohol and other drug and violence prevention-related compliance requirements, including ensuring the office's contribution to the the biennial review of Alcohol and Other Drug programs for the Department of EducationOversee the administration of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) or other assessment tools including survey planning, distribution, and the sharing of findings, implications, and recommendationsDeliver an end of the year report on accomplishments and recommendations for the office and campus/community program stakeholders including program planning, learning outcomes and program evaluation in collaboration with office educatorsRepresent the Office of Health and Wellness Education and/or the Division of Student Affairs by providing active leadership on wellness-related committees that support strategic objectives and collaboration including Middlebury Leadership AllianceServe as the point of contact for parent/family and community stakeholder programming or communication requestsAdvise student organizations as appropriate and as requestedDemonstrate and maintain professional boundaries in working with students and colleaguesHire, train, and supervise student workers in the Office of Health and Wellness EducationRemain directly responsible for decisions related to new hires, performance management, and terminations of Health and Wellness Education professional staffManage operations and training requirements for the established peer rape crisis worker program including serving as an administrator in an on-call rotation and supervising other educators in the administrator on-call rotationPlan and administer the resources of the unit including budget, staff and space and seek outsideresources as needed/available through grant writing and community collaborationsServe on the Middlebury Leadership AllianceParticipate in Care Team meetings as needed or assigned to address high risk student casesEnsure that the office meets standards established by the American College Health Association (ACHA), the CAS Standards, and local lawMaintain and develop skills via participation in continuing education opportunities and membership in the American College Health Association (ACHA), New England Health Educators' Network (NEHEN), and attendance at the ACHA New England College Health Association (NECHA) affiliate annual meetingsDevelop and maintain professional relationships with counterparts at peer institutions including engagement in peer review processes, as well as with local and national violence prevention resources, on campuses and in communities, to stay apprised of best practices in intimate violence prevention for college studentsOther duties as assignedSome evening and weekend hours are required*General Responsibilities:*Develop a strategic plan for health and wellness education that is in alignment with the vision, principles, directions, distinction, mission, and transformational goals of Middlebury College and the Division of Student AffairsOversee and implement the institution's student health and wellness education programs and processes, including the overall management and development of a contemporary health and wellness program with both unique and collaborative elements designed to meet the developmental and age-appropriate needs of studentsAdvocate for health and wellness as core values of the institution through the dissemination research that demonstrates the effect of individual health behaviors and environmental factors on student success, and the promotion of a shared vision of health as the responsibility of all campus and community membersFocus on transforming the campus and community environments through population-level initiatives building upon the inter-relationships and interdependencies among the members and systems of the campus and communityDesign health promotion initiatives that are proactive, responsive, and sensitive to the needs and preferences of a diverse and changing population given the social, cultural, political, and economic disparities that influence health and guided by values of cultural inclusion, respect, equality, and equity.Create opportunities to further understanding of the connections between culture, identity, and social justice as determinants of health and factors affecting belongingApply extensive knowledge of current and emerging college health issues, environmental management/prevention strategies, health behavior change theories and ecological framework, and evidence-informed practice in college-age populationsDevelop and implement a comprehensive health and wellness education program within the residential life curriculum for undergraduates*Education:*Master's degree required in public health, health promotion, community health, social work, education, higher education administration or counseling, psychology, or related field with Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) designation, with a preference for Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) designation.*Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:*Candidates should possess strong leadership, organizational, and presentation skills; strong intervention skills one-on-one, in small groups, and large groups; strong technology skills (presentation software, word processing, social media); an ability to meet deadlines; handle multiple, complex, and abstract tasks; capacity for detail-oriented work; an ability to work independently as well as part of a team; an understanding of health promotion and behavior change theories; advanced training and skills in health promotion and prevention program delivery; demonstrated ability to identify and makes referrals to the network of campus and community services for students; training in motivational interviewing; ability to create social norms and marketing campaigns from community-level data; understanding of an oppression-based model of health promotion and mental health (and associated multicultural approaches to prevention); commitment to addressing intersections of multiple identities and their related health outcomes; proven record of successful work with college students, faculty, staff and community members from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds including socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, first generation college students, and LGBTQ populations; and commitment to public health and social justice change models.*Experience:*Six to eight years of professional experience in college health promotion, prevention, or counseling; social work; student affairs administration; community health/mental health; leadership development and/or training and technical experience in aforementioned areas desired. Experience working in higher education/student affairs preferred. Preference for candidates with a record of increasing programmatic and staff supervision. Unpaid or volunteer experience in these fields may be applied to the five year minimum professional expectation but may not replace the professional experience entirely; candidates who wish to apply volunteer experience should demonstrate how their experience is equivalent to professional experience.Ideal candidates would also bring experience in community needs assessments, program planning, logic model development, community-based evaluation methodologies (such as Empowerment Evaluation), and assessment; building, maintaining, and facilitating small group experiences and community-wide campaigns or programs; developing, facilitating, and coordinating professional development opportunities for adult learners; experience working in health promotion/prevention with college-age students; developing and editing educational and communication tools (web, print, social media); peer education facilitation, training, and assessment; and mental health or educational advocacy and/or counseling. Candidates with demonstrated experience and training in leadership, change management, and organizational development preferred.Candidates with training experience and/or certification in the following programs/strategies are strongly preferred: Green Dot Violence Prevention Strategy (college and study abroad curriculum), other bystander intervention curricula for college students (e.g. Bringing in the Bystander, Step Up, etc.), crisis worker/advocate training, QPR Suicide Prevention, Depression OutReach Alliance (DORA), Recognition/Insight/Openness (RIO), Student Support Network (SSN), Brief Alcohol Screening and Interventions for College Students (BASICS), Cannabis Screening and Interventions for College Students (CASICS), CHOICES, and Marijuana Prevention Program (MAP), Koru Mindfulness for Emerging Adults, and Our Whole Lives or Planned Parenthood's sexuality education curriculum. Candidates should identify trainings and proficiencies in other similar or related curricula in application materials.*Physical Demands:*Regularly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
