The role

This is a key research role in the Effective Digital Entrepreneurship & Business Support Project (EDEBS), led by ACH, a leading social enterprise specialising in migrant and refugee integration and employment services. You will conduct research and analysis with the PI, working closely with ACH and the West of England Combined Authority, through its Growth Hub.

The main aim of EDEBS is to reinforce the launch, stabilisation and growth of (500) non-EU migrants' businesses through personalised business support for existing businesses or pre-start entrepreneurs.

Your work will involve engagement with strong knowledge exchange partnerships including academic scholars and networks, public and private sector and civil society organisations.

You will carry out research and data analysis to assess the effectiveness of the business support model, to identify criteria for measuring success and to identify where the model might be adapted to address ongoing structural and other barriers to integration.

What will you be doing?

You will work closely with the project partners to develop an assessment framework for use in measuring progress and identifying barriers to success in entrepreneurship. You will conduct the key data collection and analysis work, which is a key element of the University of Bristol's contribution to EDEBS. This work includes collecting, validating and analysing data, drafting case studies, preparing analytical reports, academic papers and policy briefings. You will help to prepare symposia and webinars for funders, academics, public audiences and policymakers.

Specific duties include:
  • Developing an assessment framework for use in measuring progress and identifying barriers to success
  • Writing case studies and drafting policy briefing papers
  • Supporting the delivery of a symposium and webinars for funders and policymakers to share findings and develop policy interventions

The role, by nature of the project itself, involves research engagement and impact beyond academia, and the role-holder will be expected to continue that work and consider innovative ways to best achieve that end.

You should apply if
  • You have a doctorate (or equivalent experience) with subject knowledge in a relevant social sciences area and some research experience.
  • You can demonstrate breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in a social sciences field relevant to this project.
  • You can evidence well-developed analytical skills.
  • You can evidence ability to use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the research context.
  • You have the ability to organise your own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  • You have experience of conducting interviews and carrying out thematic analysis.
  • You have experience of working with/supporting others on a research team and with external partners.
  • You have knowledge and/or experience of alternative business models.
  • You have knowledge and/or experience of researching inclusive employment practices.
