The role

This position is an excellent opportunity for a health or social researcher with expertise in, or affinity with, public health to be involved in public health research within a leading public health department. The post will involve working with Professor Rona Campbell and other members of the Centre for Public Health on programmes of research concerned with setting up a school health research network in South West England, multiple risk behaviour and sex and relationships education in schools.

The Centre for Public Health hosts Bristol's membership of The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research (SPHR) which undertakes research into public health with an emphasis on what works practically and meets the needs of policymakers, practitioners and the public. The NIHR SPHR has strong links with local public health practice in the NHS and Local Authorities in Bristol and the West of England. The Centre also hosts the new NIHR Bristol and Cardiff Public Health Intervention Research Studies team which works with Local Authorities and third sector organisations to evaluate novel public health interventions.

What will you be doing?

You will be involved in conducting focussed literature reviews, assisting with the analysis of existing data and helping to make the case for further funding. The role will require a range of mixed methods research skills including expertise in natural experimental methodology, statistics and qualitative research methods. It will also involve a good understanding of public health research and the ability to be write clearly and accurately, to be able to review and assimilate information quickly, and the ability to communicate complex scientific information effectively to a variety of audiences.

You should apply if
  • You have experience of public health research and it excites you!
  • You hold knowledge of application public health research and public health as it applies to children and young people.
  • You can demonstrate specific expertise in statistics and/or epidemiology.
  • You possess a range of mixed methods research skills, including expertise in natural experimental methodology, statistics, qualitative research methods and experience of gaining ethical approval for research studies.
  • You have knowledge of complex intervention development and evaluation in general and of RCT, natural experiment and process evaluation designs in particular.
  • You are familiar with research governance issues relevant to public health research.
  • You can demonstrate excellent writing skills and enjoy academic writing.
  • You have good time management skills and a proven ability to work to deadlines and plan and prioritise work accordingly.
  • You have a good track record of managing you own workload effectively and taking responsibility for projects.
