The role

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented analyst to join the MRC Integrative Epidemiology unit (MRC IEU) at the University of Bristol to develop and apply statistical methods for the analysis of data with some missing values. The two-year project will resolve key outstanding questions about the use of multiple imputation for addressing missing data issues in large observational data sets, and then go on to program an automated expert system to carry out multiple imputation.

You will join our growing team of data scientists, medical statisticians and epidemiologists at the University of Bristol. The project is a collaboration with Professor James Carpenter (Department of Medical Statistics, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and MRC Clinical Trials Unit, University College London), with research visits between Bristol and London.

What will you be doing?
  • You will investigate performance of multiple imputation (MI) using real datasets and simulation studies.
  • Investigate and evaluate diagnostic tools for MI.
  • You will incorporate current knowledge and insights from the analyses above into an expert MI system (developed in R) and to evaluate this system using existing datasets.
  • Contribute to writing manuscripts for publication and to present findings at research conferences and other internal or external meetings.
  • Thoroughly document and version control all code.

You should apply if
  • A strong background in biostatistics, epidemiology, or other relevant quantitative discipline
  • Experience of carrying out multiple imputation.
  • Experience of evaluating and comparing statistical methods using simulations
  • Proficiency in R, for both statistical analysis and programming
  • Experience of applied statistical analysis using large datasets
  • Proficiency in UNIX-like platforms and high-performance computing
