This immersive role allows you the opportunity to change the world for the better by supporting our students and research staff. Your degree, HND, NVQ4 or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Engineering is pivotal to your ability to provide specialist research advice and support for the activities in the laboratories including assistance in designing experiments as well as the operation, maintenance and development of the facilities and their associated measurement equipment. In addition, you will support the local risk assessment processes, and the identification and mitigation of hazards and risk, provide operational support to School management, staff and students on all H&S issues and responsibilities and deliver local H&S training and inductions. Therefore a practical experience of engineering and conducting Health and Safety inspections, audits and incident investigations is essential.

The School of Engineering encompasses 4 academic Departments (Mechanical Engineering; Aeronautics and Astronautics; Civil, Marine and Environmental Engineering; Institute for Sound and Vibration Research) and delivers 8 different undergraduate degree programmes (Acoustical Engineering; Aeronautics and Astronautics; Audiology; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Foundation Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Ship Science) and a range of related postgraduate Master's courses. The School also undertakes world leading research and enterprise activity and utilises over 10,000m2 of specialist workshops, laboratories and testing facilities dedicated to engineering including:
  • National Infrastructure Laboratory, for structural and fatigue testing;
  • National Wind Tunnel facilities, including rolling road capability;
  • 138m towing tank for ship model and marine energy research;
  • Cryogenics for superconducting magnet research;
  • Electrochemistry Laboratories for fuel cell, battery and corrosion research;
  • X-ray imaging and computed tomography;
  • Anechoic chambers, including for jet engine noise testing;
  • 6 axis large system vibration shaker;
  • Advanced Tribology;
  • Driving and Flight Simulators;
  • The Engineering Design and Manufacturing Centre (EDMC) with extensive CNC machining and 3D metal printing facilities.

This is a truly immersive role that works at the very heart of our customer centric service - ensuring effective, timely and comprehensive health and safety support for the students and staff of the School of Engineering.
