Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of international research and teaching excellence. It has a strong programme of initial teacher education including primary and secondary PGCE, an undergraduate programme in Education Studies, and a full portfolio of Masters and Doctoral degrees and professional development opportunities.

The person appointed to this position will join an experienced team of Math Educators and Researchers. They will be expected to contribute to teaching on the Secondary Mathematics PGCE Programme and other Programmes across the School. The successful applicant will conduct research across the School and work within our Mathematics, Science and Health Education Research Centre to produce research that is of excellent quality. You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Mathematics Education research.

The PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and work in partnership with local secondary schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the Teachers' Standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high-quality learning and teaching. We are seeking to appoint a Mathematics Education expert, preferably with recent and relevant school teaching experience, who would be able to design and lead pedagogical Mathematics Specialist teaching sessions as well as sessions in a cross-curricular context. In addition to planning and teaching sessions at the University they may also be expected to visit trainee teachers in schools in order to monitor and moderate progress. There would also be opportunities for the appointee would be able to contribute to other undergraduate and post-graduate education programmes within the School.

As a colleague on a Balanced Pathway, the successful applicant will also be expected work with colleagues in the Mathematics, Science and Health Education Research Centre within the School of Education. They would be expected to work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues, to undertake research and produce high-quality articles to be published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as develop research bids in their specialist area of interest.

Working in collaboration with colleagues, you will have responsibility for:
  • Course design and teaching in Mathematics Education and general teaching pedagogy
  • Assessment of students including trainee teachers
  • Participating in Research - bidding, writing and collaborating
  • Maintaining records and paperwork as required


The role may therefore include regular travel to our network of placement schools within the region.

This position will require DBS Clearance at an enhanced level; this would need to be obtained once the applicant is in post.
