Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £30,942 to £40,322. As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is £32,817.

Full Time (37.5 hours per week) up to 31 July 2021 then 30 hours per week (0.8 FTE) from 1 August 2021 to 31 March 2023

Job Summary

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to play a significant role in the 'What Works for LGBT Young People' project. This award involves collaboration with What Works Centre for Children's Social Care and the postholder will work under the direction of Dr Jason Schaub and Professor Paul Montgomery (School of Social Policy) examining the experience of LGBT young people and the effectiveness of LGBT training programmes for professionals.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsibility for specific aspects of data collection (as discussed with the PI) including: scoping research (on LGBT young people in care issues); qualitative interviews with young people and professionals, review of training programmes, RCT process and protocol planning.
  • Responsibility for analyses and interpretation of data (both qualitative and quantitative) and relating the analyses to contextual debates. Familiarity with NVivo and SPSS is required.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings for publication; dissemination activities such as conference and seminar papers, including attendance at conferences in the UK and abroad; and dissemination aimed at non-academic audiences.
  • Working with the wider project team on project activities.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from the research, to include keeping accurate records of progress and management of data and contributing to coordination of aspects of the wider research programme.
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research.
  • Continue to develop own career and skills, and / or contributing in a limited way to teaching
  • Deliver work to deadlines, consistent with the research timetable of the programme of work.


Person Specification

Essential
  • First degree in a relevant subject (e.g. social policy, social work, sociology, public health)
  • Completed PhD (or a PhD very near to completion) in a field closely relevant to research area
  • Experience of intervention studies and qualitative research
  • Ability to work independently under appropriate supervision
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills
  • Experience of working collaboratively with others to deliver project outcomes


Desirable
  • Experience of conducting interviews with vulnerable populations
  • Experience of testing complex interventions
  • Understanding of research and debates in the field of sexuality and/or social work


Note: The postholder will be based in Birmingham with minimal UK travel required for fieldwork, though remote/home-working is possible when such travel is not required. Once travel restrictions are lifted, regular face to face meetings with Dr Schaub and/or Professor Montgomery will be required.
