Job Summary

The post is for a Clinical Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry will provide broad-based research, teaching and administration. The applicant must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and preferable have specialty training in Restorative Dentistry. They would be expected to have a Ph.D.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the delivery and further development of internationally excellent research activity through clinician-basic scientist partnerships in the School and University in the broad themes outlined above. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to teaching in Restorative Dentistry which is primarily delivered during the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th years of the BDS program, although there is also some pre-clinical teaching. An honorary clinical appointment with the Birmingham Community Health Foundation Healthcare Trust (BCHFT) will be sought and in the first instance one session per week will be available for personal treatment under the guidance of a senior academic who holds an honorary consultant contract.

Main Duties
  • To support, develop and promote all aspects of teaching of undergraduate BDS course both within Restorative Dentistry.
  • Develop clinical skills within restorative dentistry
  • To undertake 3 sessions per week of Undergraduate Clinical Teaching in Restorative Dentistry.
  • Teaching and assessment in Restorative Dentistry as agreed with the Head of School.
  • Administrative and student support activities at the discretion of the Head of School.


Learning and Teaching
  • To carry out clinical teaching (3 sessions per week) in both a simulated and clinical environment in restorative dentistry using traditional (lectures, seminars and personal supervision) and contemporary methods.
  • Examine courses at all levels, i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate (at the appropriate time) and/or higher research degree students (at the appropriate time).
  • To plan and review own teaching approach
  • To develop and apply innovative teaching approaches and materials to enable learning and enthuse students
  • To develop programme proposals and contribute to the wider design of the School teaching programme
  • To undertake the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining to ensure students' progress is being monitored and reported in line with School, College and University's procedures
  • To develop approaches to teaching and learning which are appropriate for the University and subject area and reflect developing practices elsewhere
  • To contribute to ad hoc educational projects undertaken within the School, College and University


Research
  • To develop a research project in a chosen area aligned to the research themes of the school of dentistry and the candidate's clinical interests. The successful candidate will already hold a PhD.
  • To develop methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued and add to the knowledge and understanding to the discipline
  • To publish results of research in high impact journals which lead to an enhanced reputation in the subject area
  • To develop innovative research proposals leading to funding bids with the appropriate support.
  • To engage in scholarly activity that will enhance the School, College and University's reputation.


Management/Administration/ Professional
  • To maintain registration with the GDC
  • Active participation in subject group meetings
  • Undertake academic course-related administrative tasks, including attendance at Examination Boards, as appropriate
  • Undertake appropriate scholarships necessary to maintain effective teaching materials
  • To participate in student recruitment activities where appropriate
  • Ability to undertake the duties of Head of Firm.
  • Ability to contribute to School/Unit management processes
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively


Clinical Service
  • To engage in clinical activity in restorative dentistry under consultant supervision
  • Develop clinical skills across restorative dentistry


Communication skills
  • It is essential for the appointee to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to collaborative effectively in research and teaching activities, specifically with:
  • Colleagues in Restorative Dentistry - discussion about research and teaching activities
    Research collaborators - discuss ongoing and developing research projects

    Undergraduate students - interaction during teaching activities in order to support learning and give effective feedback

    Postgraduate student - interactions during teaching activities in order to support learning and give effective feedback
    • The appointee will be a diplomatic individual who is able to converse and present their written ideas clearly. They will also possess tact and diplomacy
    • The position is of significant importance to the School of Dentistry in the strengthening of our reputation in international research excellence and education.

      Person Specification
      Demonstrable excellence in learning and teaching, management and administration.
      Learning and teaching requirements

      • Dental qualified, in active clinical practice, registered with the General Dental Council.
      • Impeccable approach to personal professional behaviour.
      • Normally, a higher Degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
      • Extensive teaching, clinical experience and scholarship within medical specialism.
      • PGCE in Higher Education teaching or equivalent
      • Fellowship (or higher) of Advance HE or Academy of Medical Educators (desirable)
      • Proven ability to design, advise on and manage learning.
      • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
      • Excellent communication skills.
      • Ability to work effectively in a team.
      • An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality.
      • Teaching quality demonstrably informed by an appropriate level of scholarship.
      • Evidence of success under the following headings:
      • Reputation for the development of teaching and learning excellence within the discipline
      • Successful and sustained use of a range of appropriate teaching methods, and assessment strategies that promote high quality learning, including learning that is flexible, distinctive and current and stimulates learners' natural curiosity.
      • Significant and sustained contribution to one or more of the following: strategic development of new programmes, approaches to learning, the development of learning resources.
      • High quality and sustained contributions to fostering excellence in teaching activities more widely.


Knowledge and Skills

UK General Dental Council (GDC)

Good Team Worker

Meets the requirements for Occupational Health Clearance and DBS screening.

Preferably have been involved in vocational training and have some teaching experience

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of adapting these to diverse environments including the clinic, classroom, lecture theatre, one-to-one situations. Able to communicate with colleagues and students at all levels in a clear, effective and timely manner.
