RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Performing clinical pathology-related analyses for animal samples in the veterinary clinical pathology laboratory of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. This may include:
  • Handling and analysis of patient and research samples in the haematology, clinical biochemistry, haemostasis and/or cytology sections of the laboratory;
  • Operation of automated biochemistry analysers (including but not limited to: Roche Cobas Integra 400 Plus, RapidPoint Blood-Gas analyser, Immulite 2000, TEG analyser, Advia 2120 and Abaxis HM5 haematology analysers, Aerospray slide stainer, ACL Elite coagulation analyser);
  • Microscopy and evaluation of blood smears from a range of animal species;
  • Quality control and quality assurance in the various laboratory sections;
  • Preparation and storage of patient and research samples;
  • Reporting of results; and
  • Various laboratory administrative tasks, including reception cover.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Diploma in Veterinary Technology; and
  • Current registration with the SAVC as a Veterinary Technologist.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Computer literacy (basic MS Word and Excel, and database and laboratory information management system (LIMS) software);
  • Report writing skills;
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance;
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment,
  • Knowledge of blood cells and cell abnormalities in domestic animals (including exotic animals);
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to work under pressure and multitask;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Conscientiousness and attention to detail; and
  • Physical mobility and arm-hand steadiness.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • B Tech in Veterinary Technology;
  • One year's experience working as a technologist in veterinary clinical pathology environment; and
  • Experience with laboratory quality assurance programmes.
