This position is with a fast-growing Berkeley based cellular agriculture company. We create delicious meat made from animal cell culture instead of animal slaughter - healthier for humans, animals, and the planet. We are excited about bringing the best bioprocessing practices into food production - cGMP documentation and traceability, bioreactor scaling - to provide the biomass to propel organoleptomics research in cellular agriculture.

We have an immediate need for a multifaceted Scientist or Bioengineer in bioprocessing of organoleptic factors with a strong drive to improve the world. You will support the bioprocessing R&D activities of the bioengineering and bioprocessing divisions to validate methods, materials, and hardware to refine the bioprocess for scaling up of mammalian and other cell culture systems to produce organoleptic factors. You will apply techniques and experiences from other fields (cell therapy, regenerative medicine, biologics manufacturing) to shape the future of food and health.

  • Study and develop lab-scale chromatography and ultrafiltration to purify organoleptic factors.
  • Provide purification support for cell line/cell culture development activities and material generation to enable formulation and analytical method development in cell based assays, dPCR, LC-MS, flow cytometry and next generation sequencing methods.
  • Media formulation, upstream bioprocess development and media optimization for bioreactors
  • Develop and study food grade scaffolds and carrier based adherent systems for bioreactors.
  • Research and optimize protocols for various bioreactors for scaling up mammalian and other food grade cell culture production systems
  • Study and optimize growth parameters of cell cultures in bioreactors and process transfer across size scales in industry settings
  • Identify key scientific and technological gaps in bioprocesses of commercial platform and lead the development of innovative solutions
  • Independently, design, review, execute, and analyze process development experiments ranging from bench through pilot scale, leading to process transfer to commercial scale
  • Evaluate new engineering technologies /systems and and appropriately validate bioprocess methods, reagents, or hardware
  • Record all experimental designs, data, observations, and results in electronic notebooks.
  • Be a mentor and thought leader to younger team members and incoming scientists and engineers.

  • PhD (preferred) or MSc in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnologies, biochemistry, life sciences or a closely related field; with industry experience
  • Experience in protein or other biopolymer purification at bench scale.
  • Hands on experience with a range of bioreactor platforms and control systems
  • Experience in developing new bioprocesses, and process transfer to production
  • Meticulous attention to lots of detain a necessity.
