Job Summary

To raise the profile of the University and its students and graduates with international employers, establishing relationships in target countries and regions to enhance support for the international student experience and their employability. The role will also promote international opportunities and experiences for Home students to increase student international mobility and the institutions' global reach, in line with the University's Strategic Framework.

The postholder will lead the implementation of Careers Network's strategy for international employer engagement. Working with colleagues from Careers Network, Alumni, and Birmingham Global, the University's international office, the postholder will increase the number and diversity of international employers actively targeting University of Birmingham students and graduates, and organise a range of virtual events and resources to support this aim, including some collaborative activity with partner institutions. This will include developing existing employer networks in key markets as well as researching and initiating relationships in targeted regions and sectors.

Main Duties

Relationship development and employer liaison
  • To lead on relationship development to build employer links and partnerships in key target countries and sectors, working with the International Office and the Alumni Office, acting as a first point of contact for international employer enquiries
  • To develop and implement a programme of activity including on-campus information sessions (where appropriate) and virtual events
  • To work with the Assistant Director for Employer Relations to highlight appropriate members for Careers Network's Employer Partner Board in order to ensure that international employer views are considered in key decision making
  • To work with partner institutions to develop the University's reach and impact


University context
  • To take an active role within a team of Careers Network colleagues to create a community of practice with a focus on supporting international students and graduates and international employers
  • To work with Careers Network's Mentoring Development Officer to expand Careers Network's current mentoring programme to international students
  • To develop appropriate materials to promote international opportunities, utilising appropriate marketing and communication channels and the University's virtual learning environment
  • To source a range of student stories to increase the capture of positive international student outcomes
  • To manage expenditure in line with budget, maintaining accurate and up to date financial records; and to monitor income generation from employer events.


Strategy and research
  • To lead on the implementation of Careers Network's strategy for international employer engagement, advising on developments and researching and adapting new models of service provision as appropriate
  • To work with Careers Network's International Careers leads, employers, University partners and professional bodies to develop a network of knowledge of international opportunities; researching student aspirations to identify demand for - and shortage areas of - global opportunities for students and graduates
  • To research targeted labour markets and to share with Employer Relations and Guidance team members to inform their work and to provide effective targeted communication of opportunities
  • To work with Careers Network's Data Analyst to increase strategic analytical use of Graduate Outcomes data to identify trends and outcomes of graduates undertaking international opportunities.


Evaluation and monitoring
  • To develop and monitor robust feedback systems to allow for the effective evaluation of events and engagement and to lead on continuous quality improvement for both the international student and employer experience
  • To lead on an annual review of international employer engagement
  • To monitor and identify new trends in growth areas to increase opportunities with employers within these sectors


Person Specification
  • An Honours degree, or equivalent experience and qualifications
  • Good knowledge of HE and the graduate labour market, including an international outlook
  • Knowledge and experience of working in an international context
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to form effective working relationships with a range of employers, colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Evidence of the ability to persuade and influence decision makers with diplomacy and sensitivity
  • Proven experience of delivering high profile events
  • Ability to generate income through sales of services
  • Proven experience of working to budgets
  • Demonstrable ordered, methodical approach, with proven attention to detail
  • Drive and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Proven experience of managing several projects to achieve targets
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages
