SENIOR LECTURER/ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Teach and develop curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Take a leading role in teaching and learning;
  • Play an active role as an academic leader in the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Contribute to the research and publication output of the department, appropriate to the post level;
  • Assist with the mentoring of emerging academics;
  • Perform academic administration and other duties at both departmental and faculty levels as determined by and agreed with the Head of Department;
  • Participate in the Department's strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, community engagement and fundraising.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A doctorate in Philosophy;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publications record appropriate to the post level;
  • A proven undergraduate teaching record;
  • A proven postgraduate supervision track record appropriate to the post level;
  • Academic citizenship in academia.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Expertise in either metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language or philosophy of mind in the analytical tradition; or in feminism, phenonemology and existentialism, critical theory, or the philosophy of race in the continental tradition;
  • A commitment to teaching at all levels both in core modules in philosophy and in enrichment courses taught to students from other faculties;
  • A commitment to work to continually revise and transform the curriculum;
  • Prior experience of teaching groups with large student numbers;
  • International and peer recognition appropriate to the post level;
  • Appropriate communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Appropriate administrative skills.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Additional expertise in ancient philosophy, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of medicine, or the philosophy of economics;
  • Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • An NRF rating;
  • Resource mobilisation, which, at associate and full professorship level, includes fund-raising.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
