The Faculty of Science's organisational structure consists of two schools, two research institutes, administrative services and technical services. This position supports the C3 research institute located within the Faculty of Science. C3 is made up of 4 academic research programs, each with a team of researchers, a small group of research integrators who work across all research teams and a team of professional staff, both administrative and technical.

Detailed Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the team on a fixed term basis of 9 months. The incumbent will support sensor development, lab automation and instrument development associated with algal-based research. This position will support the development of sensors and solutions for automation of laboratory techniques, as well as compile and interpret test results.

You will be responsible for the following:
  • Supporting research into the development of novel biosensors linked to the C3 research program, including electrochemical, microfluidic, and optoelectronic based biosensor platforms. Also, assisting in the fabrication of these sensors
  • Assisting in the design of prototypes using the Arduino and Raspberry Pi platforms, both assembly and programming
  • Assembling and testing electronic circuits for prototype devices, both on perfboards and printed circuit boards (PCBs), according to electronic schematic design diagrams
  • Documenting circuit designs, design changes and testing procedures
  • Performing experiments associated with the use of biosensors and automated bioreactors, analyse data and draft technical reports

If successful in applying for this role, you will have:
  • Clear and precise communication (both written and spoken) of technical information
  • Demonstrated ability to plan work and deliver within established time constraints
  • Knowledge of circuit designs for amplifying an analogue signal
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related experience such as other technical field related to electronic circuit design or manufacture experience
  • Previous experience working with sensor development
  • Proven ability to prioritize in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality results to project team
