Do you want to be part of a groundbreaking automation implementation to support the development, evaluation, and optimization of drug products? GlaxoSmithKline R&D has committed to increasing the use of automation.As part of this strategy, the Medicinal Science and Technology (MST) team has created a core-testing facility to support the development, evaluation, and optimization of drug products.This team will actively drive change in the application of automation to daily decision making. The High Throughput Automation role will ensure that current and future automation is appropriately used to deliver value to GSK projects.Accordingly this person will implement innovative automated platforms and workflows in collaboration with MST functions based in the US and UK.

Key responsibilities:
  • Working in a matrix team, develop appropriate automation protocols to meet the needs of the scientists, analysts, chemists, engineers and formulators in MST.
  • Conduct automated experiments, exploring both the physical properties of materials, excipients of pharmaceutical relevance and chemical reactions of synthetic intermediates.
  • Participate on multidisciplinary project teams, and collaborate with colleagues to define and implement development strategies according to project timelines.
  • Organize, evaluate, and present data in an effective and scientific manner.
  • Contribute to the development of new automation approaches and knowledge within the global automation organization.
  • Collaborate proactively with the analytical lines to identify standard analytical work packages and embed the use of automation so that it becomes the standard work practice for certain activities.
  • Collate and feedback issues, new ideas, improvements to the wider Developability teams
  • Ensure the local capability to rapidly leverage existing laboratory automation in order to dramatically reduce the time to address design selection issues with drug development.
  • Perform research and leadership in the development and implementation of innovative automation platforms and workflow solutions.
  • Act as system owner for a Freeslate CM automation system and participate in IT systems and technical process reviews to ensure data integrity and updates in line with GSK global standards.
  • Identify and recommend processes and technologies that achieve more efficient and cost effective data and knowledge management.
  • Lead the definition and embedding of underpinning developability data standards for automation.
  • Ensure compliance with all quality and data integrity regulations.
  • In partnership with MST department members, progress projects for automation laboratories use and follow-up with project teams to define work plan and schedule.
  • Conduct high throughput experiments, exploring both the physical properties of materials, excipients of pharmaceutical relevance and chemical reactions of synthetic intermediates.
  • Write protocols for new automation workflows using Unchained Labs LEA Library Studio and Automation Studio.
  • Support renovation of new laboratory space for automation equipment.

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • BS in chemistry/engineering/biology or related scientific field
  • Experience diagnosing problems in analytical platforms
  • Experience in the design and implementation of HPLC analytical methods
  • Experience with solid state analytical methods - eg microscopy, Raman, XRD, etc.


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with multiple internal and external groups to successfully deliver projects BS in chemistry/engineering/biology or related scientific field
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and experience diagnosing problems in analytical platforms
  • Experience in the design and implementation of HPLC analytical methods
  • Experience with solid state analytical methods - eg microscopy, Raman, XRD, etc.
  • Proficient in and demonstrates highly effective oral and written communication skills
  • Broad knowledge base and active member of the analytical or formulation community
  • High learning agility has the ability and willingness to deal effectively with first-time situations or changing conditions
  • Knowledge and experience with statistical design of experiments and analysis of results
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate, test, and troubleshoot HPLC
  • Proven ability to translate scientific processes to new platforms and to identify new application areas
  • Team player and ability to work in a matrix environment
  • Knowledge of analytical method development in support of NCE development or knowledge of developability and pre-formulation applied to NCE development
  • Demonstrated experience in the successful assessment, design and development of a wide range of dosage forms
  • Demonstrated experience in preformulation methodologies, including generating data for biopharmaceutics modeling
