Position Details

Area: School of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322 with potential progression once in post to £42,792. PLEASE NOTE - due to external funding limitations, the maximum starting salary that can be offered is £33,797

Band/Grade: Grade 7

Hours: Full-time

Duration: Fixed-term for up to 9 months

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK

Background

The Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage at the School of Chemical Engineering is undertaking a number of research projects on cold thermal energy storage technologies funded by EPSRC, EU and industries. Overall assessment and techno-economic analysis of our developed technologies are important elements for these projects and we are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow to support these areas.

Summary of Role

The Research Fellow is expected to contribute to the new approach development of techno-economic analysis and potential market analysis for our developing cold thermal energy storage technologies, by linking technical performance to economic performance. In addition to conducting own original research, the candidate will also be responsible for the project management and communication with project partners from other institutions/countries. Finally, the candidate is also expected to support master/doctoral students in related research areas and detailed arrangement will be upon discussion.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct own and original research
  • Collect cold thermal energy storage related information (policy, market, revenue mechanism etc.) and research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as internal communication, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Develop techno-economic models and process analysis
  • Manage and maintain databases and research outputs
  • Write up patents, reports and academic papers for publication
  • Present research outputs at project meetings, seminars and academic conferences
  • Provide guidance and assistant as required to other group members
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience
  • Hold or close to achieving a PhD degree or equivalent in relevant subject area (essential)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in thermal energy storage and management (essential)
  • Practical experience in information collection and analysis (essential)
  • Outstanding skillset in liaising with project partners (essential)
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully (essential)
  • Experience of disseminating research outcome through peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences (essential)
  • Ability to communication with a second working language is also desirable for the communication with international funders and partners (desirable)
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
