Molecular Biologist

GlaxoSmithKline is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines both individual talent and technical resources to support our mission to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated molecular biologist with a passion for protein technology, to join the department of Protein, Cellular, and Structural Sciences (PCSS) at GSK's facility in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania. The primary responsibility of the department is to design, generate and validate biological reagents for discovery activities across all of GSK's therapeutic modalities. The department also provides the structural and mechanistic understanding of drug target, molecular recognition and mode of action to deliver the best molecule.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the conceptual design and generation of protein and cellular reagents for use in GSK's drug discovery platforms. Automation, data science and in silico protein design skills are all desirable, as GSK's future molecular biology strategy must enable high throughput protein expression platforms. Experience carrying out automated methods for construct generation, protein expression and purification would be desirable. The appointee will be capable of good experimental record-keeping and will have excellent written and oral communication skills. You will be expected to attend project meetings and contribute to project teams in a collaborative manner. An ability to work towards agreed timelines and effectively organise their work will be considered a key asset of the successful applicant.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for design and generation of expression vectors for automated, high throughput protein expression platforms
  • Contribute to the development of a high throughput molecular cloning platform for various expression systems
  • Use and continue to develop department's in silico construct design and next generation bioinformatic tools.
  • Work in a matrix team environment to enable optimal delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard
  • Independently execute laboratory experiments and/or advanced data analysis, integration and interpretation with an emphasis on providing appropriate context for data and experiments in the progress of programs and/or platforms
  • Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety training and practice

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

A Bachelor OR Master's degree in a life sciences discipline (e.g. molecular biology, cell biology, bioengineering) with at least 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should have strong track-record in either one or more of the following disciplines: Molecular Biology, Protein Expression/Purification, Protein Design

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Expertise in protein construct design and generation, including expression vector construction
  • Practical knowledge of automation in molecular biology/cell biology, including familiarity with the used of automated protein purification and liquid handlers such as the Integra Assist Plus or Tecan robots.
  • Advanced data analysis experience, e.g. Excel or Spotfire.
  • Practical knowledge of gene synthesis, library construct design, and DNA sequencing
  • Protein expression experience in various systems, including: E.coli, mammalian, insect, and cell-free
  • Ability to plan and execute multiple tasks concurrently and evaluate multiple scientific strategies in parallel where appropriate
  • Demonstrated strengths in high performance behaviours, such as building relationships, flexible thinking, and enabling/driving change.
