Principal Development Scientist

New Product Development is critical in the delivery and execution of key innovation projects. Product development is responsible for the development of a robust formulation or device, development of analytical methods that confirms both the efficacy and the safety of the product when manufactured and over time and the development of robust manufacturing processes to ensure the delivery and the quality of the product. This group is often the driving force behind an innovation project and during the innovation cycle the group that often deploys the most resources.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:
  • Leads the new product delivery within the category sub teams and core project teams
  • R&D technical leadership of projects, working within cross functional project teams to ensure development, registration and optimal commercialization
  • Partner with Commercial and Supply Chain functional team members and core project team leads
  • Strong contributor to the creation of new innovation through technical knowledge and consumer insights


Strategy setting
  • Works with the Category R & D Lead to contribute to the category and sub team project strategy.
  • Support the Category R & D Lead in setting project budgets and resource planning.
  • Partners closely with Commercial and Supply Chain sub team leads to provide technical support and insight into product delivery at Project Core Team level.
  • Works with peers in Technical Excellence and Quality to ensure that Best Practice is being implemented within project teams during product development.
  • Works with Category R & D Lead to determine offshoring/outsourcing strategy.


Strategy delivery
  • Responsible for the delivery of R&D project milestones from early stage through development to launch including formulation/device, analytical and process development.
  • Ensure that consumer insights are embedded in all product delivery with early engagement with consumer insights team and sensory product understanding to drive consumer liking and product success
  • Facilitates decisions to progress formulations and innovation opportunities based on winning differentiated claims through close partnership with CDMA
  • Manage allocated resources to ensure projects are on schedule and within budget and highlight to Category R & D Lead and other stakeholders any deviations to those plans.
  • Consider both internal & external routes to deliver innovation and have a strong assessment of whether external innovation can accelerate delivery versus internal capability build
  • Provide input/advice as to resource requirements/risk mitigation plans for approval of projects at Portfolio Management Board and Technical Review Board for project team.
  • Approve NPD internal and external documentation for projects
  • Where required provide input into technical due diligence for product development related activities.
  • Highlight project issues and risks to Category R & D Lead and advise on contingencies and resolution plans.


'Protecting our science'
  • Updates the sub category team, Technical Excellence and Supply Chain leads on new technologies and other relevant internal/external new technologies and product innovations
  • During new product project lifecycle ensure cost efficiencies, contingency/mitigation planning, risk assessments and any potential IP generation are managed appropriately.
  • Strong knowledge of competitive landscape for the sub category with a clear recommendation to Category R & D Lead of where to play and how to win


Communication and senior stakeholder management
  • With project teams and project management measure project performance versus milestones and communicate to NPD Lead, Commercial and Supply Chain functional project leads


Category R&D people management
  • Supports Category R & D Lead in identification, recruitment and retention of talent and ensures succession planning in place for key roles
  • Model GSK values and maintain resilient culture to manage through ongoing change
  • Technical leadership, training, coaching, mentoring, professional development and performance management of NPD associates to meet the needs of the business


Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or related science areas
  • 7+ years experience in the formulation development of multiple formats/dose forms for Naturals products
  • Naturals product development with expertise regarding critical qualities of natural ingredients
  • Experience partnering with Regulatory and Medical on the requirements for product delivery in the area of specialization
  • Experience in product development with a strong understanding of what is required to deliver a product to the market-place
  • Experience and understanding of manufacturing sites and the requirements to maintain a product on the market
  • Experience working with a range of strategic offshore/outsourcing partners to deliver products
  • Experience working in a highly complex matrix organisation
  • Experience with solving complex technical and operational problems in a timely manner


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Master's Degree or PhD in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences or related science areas
  • Evidence of strong communication and teamwork with a can-do attitude
