Are you someone with proven abilities to carry out teaching and research in Contemporary History?

Do you have an excellent research record and potential for establishing an international reputation?

Are you passionate about delivering an exceptional student experience in a research-intensive Russell Group University?

The School of History at the University of Leeds brings together a dynamic group of scholars working on Global History and International History in the period after 1945. This breadth of expertise feeds into a diverse undergraduate curriculum, as well as thriving MA and PhD programmes. We engage actively with local communities, and with partners at institutions around the world. We have particular strengths in the contemporary history of world affairs, including themes such as diplomacy, security, intelligence, and state-building, as well as transnational issues such as war volunteers, refugees, and decolonisation. We are looking to appoint someone whose expertise will help us to build on our existing strengths as we diversify our curricula, offering cutting-edge research and research-led teaching on a thematic area of contemporary history and exploring international or transnational perspectives.

As Lecturer, you will carry out research, teaching, and management within the School, Faculty and University, in an area of history from c. 1945 to the present day which speaks directly to the global challenges of the contemporary world.

You will be able to teach at all levels of the undergraduate programme. You will take the lead in developing new and innovative teaching relating to your research expertise, which may include through the development of your own portfolio of modules and contributions to existing team-taught courses and programmes. You will contribute to all our undergraduate programmes , including to compulsory modules on the BA International History and Politics programme . You will contribute to our MA programmes , including the MA in Modern History and other relevant programmes. You will supervise research students. You will have a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in History or a cognate discipline, and relevant teaching experience.

We welcome applications from candidates working in one of the following thematic areas - the history of human rights and humanitarianism; race and indigeneity; global health challenges; social justice movements (including, but not limited to, disability rights, gender equality, LGBTQ+ activism); climate change and environmentalism - for the period after 1945 and in international/transnational perspective. Preference may be given to candidates exploring these themes from a Global South or non-Anglophone perspective.

You should submit a clear, evidenced explanation of how you address each criterion listed under 'What will you bring to the role?

' in the online application portal. You should also provide a statement outlining your research and teaching plans for the next five years (maximum 1000 words). Please also provide a CV (including publications, maximum 5 pages). A separate cover letter is not required.
