An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within a multi-disciplinary project to utilise a range of climate projections and meteorological datasets to quantify the burden of disease resulting from heat stress during pregnancy and in new-born children in Africa.
Supervised by Dr Cathryn Birch and Dr John Marsham, you will assess the ability of a suite of climate models to represent African temperature extremes in present-day climate and produce bias-corrected future climate projections. You will interact closely with members of the project team from other disciplines to understand the types of climate information they require and provide them expert guidance and quality controlled datasets. You will work together with team members from outside your discipline to build and test health burden models for key locations in Africa. You will assess whether temperature forecasts and early warning systems could increase resilience to heat risks and work together with others create National Adaptation Plans for the project's focus countries of Burkina Faso and Kenya.
The position is available through the Belmont Forum, an international partnership of funding organisations, international science councils, and regional consortia, of which the United Kingdom is a member through the Natural Environmental Research Council. You will work closely with health scientists and epidemiologists from The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, University of Washington and partners in Africa. There may be opportunities to travel to Africa as part of the role, providing it is deemed safe to do so (in light of COVID-19 travel restrictions, etc.)
