This appointment is a joint appointment in the Department of Industrial Engineering and the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking.

The Department of Industrial Engineering is a research-intensive department, focusing on the following areas of research to improve global competitiveness: Operations Research,

Data Science in Industrial Engineering; Operations Management and Logistics; Advanced Manufacturing; and Engineering and Technology Management.

The School for Data Science and Computational Thinking was launched in July 2019 with a vision to be a world-class institution in data science and computational thinking in and

for Africa. The School is rapidly growing with a diverse set of academics focusing on both the science of data science as well as the application of data science in a diverse set of

fields.

The incumbent will be expected to join both the Data Science Research Group (DSRG) of the Department of Industrial Engineering, as well as the School for Data Science and

Computational Thinking to advance Data Science research and teaching. The incumbent will be expected to keep abreast of the latest academic content and practical applications

within Data Science.

This is a permanent appointment tailored for an academically strong candidate who is a recent PhD graduate wishing to pursue an academic career in Data Science. Reporting to

a senior researcher from the Department in the above area of specialisation and the director of the School, the incumbent will perform or assist with research and lecturing duties.

Half the funding for this post is provided by the School. The incumbent is expected to actively seek external funding to remain part of the School. The incumbent will have a fallback

permanent appointment in the Department if such funding is not secured, and performance is acceptable.

Specific duties will include, although will not be limited to:
  • Assisting with the academic guidance and management of the DSRG and the School;
  • Undergraduate, postgraduate and short course teaching in Data Science and related subjects;
  • Providing guidance and leadership to postgraduate students and undergraduate project students;
  • Conducting research in Data Science and technology transfer to and from industry;
  • Creating and participating in the application of research grants;
  • Providing assistance to the consulting efforts of the School.


Assisting with the academic guidance and management of the DSRG and the School;

Undergraduate, postgraduate and short course teaching in Data Science and related subjects;

Providing guidance and leadership to postgraduate students and undergraduate project students;

Conducting research in Data Science and technology transfer to and from industry;

Creating and participating in the application of research grants;

Providing assistance to the consulting efforts of the School.

  • PhD in a Data Science-related discipline with at least three years's technical or research PhD in a Data Science-related discipline with at least three years's technical or research experience in Data Science, but with specific focus on at least two of the following areas of specialisation: Evolutionary Learning, Deep Learning, Explainable Artificial Intelligence, and Data Mining;
  • Scholarly achievements in the above Data Science specialisations, to include journal and conference publications;
  • A sound academic record;
  • The academic ability to present modules in Data Science in engineering undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums;
  • Experience in supervision and assessment of students in undergraduate Data Science projects and master¿s theses;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong commitment to becoming a scholar in Data Science;

Scholarly achievements in the above Data Science specialisations, to include journal and conference publications;

A sound academic record;

The academic ability to present modules in Data Science in engineering undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums;

Experience in supervision and assessment of students in undergraduate Data Science projects and master¿s theses;

Good verbal and written communication skills;

Strong commitment to becoming a scholar in Data Science;

  • With reference to Data Science disciplines, teaching and research experience in Machine Learning or Big Data Platforms and Architectures;
  • Programming experience specifically in Python or R, with experience in big data architecture development;
  • Proficiency in Afrikaans and English;
  • Success in attracting research funding or experience in the development of industrial Data Science solutions.
