Main Duties and Responsibilities

Learning and Teaching

The successful candidate will be an engaged and inspiring lecturer with an excellent understanding of innovative and inclusive practices. They will also be committed to educational equality and equity through working to reduce attainment gaps and contributing to activities to decolonise higher education.

Duties will include:
  • Programme Director for the Applied Educational and Child Psychology Doctorate.
  • Direct teaching with trainee educational psychologists in their first, second and third years of training.
  • Overseeing provision of academic and supervised professional practice supervision for trainee educational psychologists, including liaison with their designated placement supervisors.
  • Overseeing and contributing to research supervision for trainee educational psychologists in their second and third years of full-time registration.
  • Overseeing, managing and conducting examination of trainee educational psychologists' academic work and professional portfolios.
  • Internal examination of theses submitted by trainee educational psychologists within the University of Birmingham, and external examination of theses submitted by trainee educational psychologists at other approved programmes of study in England.
  • Undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining.
  • Managing the Applied Education and Child Psychology Doctorate tutor meetings.
  • Overseeing planning developments to the curriculum, its delivery and its assessment arrangements, harnessing developments to knowledge and practice arising from the parent disciplines of psychology and education, and mindfulness of the need for full compliance with internal and external regulatory protocols and processes including the requirements of the HCPC and BPS.
  • Support the publication and impact of trainee educational psychologists' research and practice.
  • Work with local authorities and other stakeholders to maintain effective procedures for student recruitment to the course and to generate practice placements for trainee educational psychologists in Years 1 - 3 of the course.
  • Represent the course at a regional and national level including West Midlands Regional Association meetings, Programme Director meetings and briefings organised by organisations such as NAPEP, the HCPC and DfE.

Additionally, the candidate will be required to:
  • Contribute to teaching and marking across the School as required by the Head of Department and Head of School.
  • Have a track record of substantial and sustained high value impact on the enhancement of the student experience, and/or employability or the equivalent if from a Professional Practice background.
  • engage in scholarly activity to enable them to make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research;
  • contribute to debate nationally about new approaches to policy, methods and practices through publications, conferences, and activities that advance quality in the field

Leadership/citizenship

The candidate is expected to demonstrate qualities of academic leadership commensurate with career stage and to be a 'good citizen' generally. This will require the ability to take on departmental or School leadership roles as appropriate whilst contributing to student recruitment and other school and departmental activities.

Management/administration
  • Ability and willingness to chair/lead activities in the Department/ School and provide representation on University committees or working groups.
  • Ensure own work is consistently carried out to a very high standard.
  • Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major research and/or teaching activities (as appropriate).
  • Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with a sustained high value impact of manifest benefit to the College and the University.
  • Contribute to the administration/management of research and/or teaching across the Department/School.
  • Advise on personal development of staff and students (as appropriate).
  • Make a sustained contribution to widening participation, Open Day and/or recruitment activities, schools outreach and/or public understanding of the discipline.
  • Contribute to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups)

Person Specification

Essential
  • An Educational Psychology Doctorate (or equivalent)
  • Registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist and eligibility for chartered membership with the British Psychological Society.
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or a willingness to obtain this within a period following appointment)
  • Foundational knowledge, educational psychology practice experience and skills relating to:

o a range of psychological assessment paradigms and methods, formulation, intervention and evaluation suitable for use with children, young people and young adults across the 0-25 year age continuum;

o models of consultation;

o organisational analysis and development;

o evidence-validated approaches to preventing and / or reducing the severity and enduring impact of difficulties in learning, mental health or other aspects of psycho-social and psycho-educational development, and / or mitigating the influence of special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Expertise relevant to supporting trainee EPs' development of the following specific core competencies for doctoral programmes in educational psychology in England, Northern Ireland and Wales specified by the British Psychological Society (Programme Standard 2: Programme content (learning, research and practice), (British Psychological Society, 2019):
  • The ability to contribute to the continuing dynamic development of the curriculum for the initial training of educational psychologists, (including situated learning within supervised placement settings), planning strategically and pragmatically to support trainees' balanced integration, application, development and evaluation of a range of conceptual frameworks and knowledge domains within the complex settings in which educational psychologists encounter and endeavour to meet the highly diverse needs of service users.
  • Depth and breadth of interest in psychological theory and research, evidenced through a coherent and clearly focused continuing academic and research development plans and strategies following qualification.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ethical and professional codes of conduct and practice, and adherence to these.
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively and co-operatively, demonstrating good interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to act diplomatically and rationally in difficult situation, showing an ability to consider the perspectives of a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from local authority educational psychology services.

We welcome applications from candidates with a background in academic settings and/or experience in professional practice who have a strong background in developing national/ regional project work with stake holders, including track records of work with bodies of relevance, such as BPS, HCPC, DfE and can demonstrate successful working with training courses nationally in their roles.
