The Department of Agronomy represents a science discipline in support of a range of key agricultural sectors, including cereal and oilseed crops, pastures, vegetables, hydroponics, and crops under protection. Weed Science is important to all aforementioned sectors. Agronomy is of particular importance to the winter rainfall areas of the Western Cape where it underpins the economic model of mixed farming systems (crop-livestock integrated systems). New advances in relation to intensive crop systems and precision farming technologies also fall within the ambit of Agronomy.



Die Departement Agronomie verteenwoordig 'n wetenskap-dissipline wat 'n reeks sleutelsektore in die landboubedryf ondersteun, insluitend grane en oliesaadgewasse, weidings, groente, hidroponika en gewasse onder beskerming. Onkruidwetenskap is van belang in al voorafgenoemde sektore. Agronomie is veral belangrik in die winterreënvalstreke van die Wes-Kaap waar dit die ekonomiese model van gemengde boerderystelsels (integrasie van vee in gewasproduksiestelsels) onderlê. Nuwe vooruitgang van intensiewe gewasproduksiestelsels en presissieboerdery-tegnologie val ook binne die bestek van Agronomie.

Responsibilities
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in compliance with the general teaching focus of the Department;
  • Developing and evaluating course material;
  • Sourcing and managing external research funds;
  • Supervising postgraduate students;
  • Conducting an active and productive research programme within Weed Science and publishing such research in relevant peer-reviewed journals;
  • Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;
  • Involvement with community or industry interaction projects;
  • Involvement with administrative service delivery at departmental, Faculty and University level.


  • Voorgraadse en nagraadse onderrig wat met die algemene onderrigfokus van die Departement ooreenstem;
  • Ontwikkel en evalueer kursusmateriaal;
  • Verkryging en bestuur van eksterne navorsingsfondse;
  • Studieleiding van nagraadse studente;
  • Uitvoer van 'n aktiewe en produktiewe navorsingsprogram binne Onkruidwetenskap en publikasie van navorsing in toepaslike eweknie-evalueerde vaktydskrifte;
  • Ontwikkeling van nasionale en internasionale navorsing en industrie-vennootskappe en netwerke;
  • Deelname aan gemeenskap- of bedryfsprojekte;
  • Deelname met administratiewe dienslewering op departementele -, Fakulteit- en Universiteitsvlakke.


Requirements
  • PhD in Agronomy or related field, or an MSc in Agronomy or related field, while registered for a PhD for a period of time already;
  • Experience or a good working knowledge of current Weed Science and a good fit for the departmental research profile;
  • Relevant peer-reviewed research publications commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • The ability and proficiency to obtain external research funding commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • Strong verbal communication skills and proficiency in MS Office, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Relevant experience in industry-related, applied research;
  • Developed relations with the agricultural industry;
  • Language proficiency for meeting the requirements of a multilingual university.
  • Proven experience in Weed Science;
  • NRF rating or equivalent;
  • Recognition within the field or discipline on a national and or international level;
  • Relevant proficiency in statistics;
  • Sound interpersonal skills;
  • Student supervision commensurate with the level of appointment.


  • PhD in Agronomie of 'n soortgelyke vakgebied, of `n MSc in Agronomie of soortgelyke vakgebied, terwyl vir `n PhD geregistreer is vir `n gewese tydperk;
  • Ervaring of `n goeie begrip van huidige Onkruidwetenskap en `n goed gepas met die departementele navorsingsprofiel;
  • Toepaslike eweknie-evalueerde wetenskaplike publikasies of ander wetenskaplike bydraes ooreenstemmend met die vlak van aanstelling;
  • Die vermoë en bekwaamheid om eksterne navorsingsbefondsing te verkry ooreenstemmend met die vlak van aanstelling;
  • Sterk mondelinge kommunikasievaardighede en bekwaamheid in MS Office, veral Microsoft Word, Excel en PowerPoint;
  • Toepaslike ervaring in industrie-verwante, toegepaste navorsing;
  • Ontwikkelde verhoudinge met die landboubedryf;
  • Taalvaardighede om aan die behoeftes van `n veeltalige universiteit te kan voldoen.
  • Bewese ervaring in Onkruidwetenskap;
  • NNS evaluering of gelykwaardig;
  • Erkenning op die gebied van of in die dissipline op nasionale en/of internasionale vlak;
  • Toepaslike vaardighede in statistiek;
  • Goeie interpersoonlike vaardighede;
  • Studieleiding ooreenstemmend met die vlak van aanstelling.
