Job Purpose

The School of Education in the College of Social Sciences is seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer in Education Leadership, with particular expertise in relation to evidence and the assessment of evidence; school evaluation and improvement; and modes of assessment. The appointee will join the Education Leadership Academy within the School, where our team of leading academics and education leaders work collaboratively to develop values-led education leadership for the future and support the future leaders of education nationally and internationally.

The Education Leadership Academy was launched in 2019 to bring the best front-line leadership practice together with outstanding research. To achieve this we have built a team of academic colleagues and guest lecturers and seminar leaders. Professor Colin Diamond is Director of ELA and brings extensive experience of leadership within the education sector from schools to national government. We offer our core masters level leadership programmes and a range of complementary activities including research, consultancy and the hugely popular seminars. Academic staff are members of both ELA and their Department in the School of Education: Teacher Education; Disability, Inclusion and Special Needs; or Education and Social Justice. The University of Birmingham has a campus in Dubai and the School of Education offers a range of education programmes there, including postgraduate qualifications in Education Leadership. The successful applicant will have the option of contributing to our work in Dubai where we are currently also appointing a Dubai-based Senior Lecturer in Education Leadership.

The philosophy, pedagogy and programmes of the Education Leadership Academy are rooted in socially inclusive and collaborative leadership and the creation of social capital within communities. We ask first, what matters? before asking what works?. We are researching with schools, largely in urban settings, that have disadvantaged cohorts and go on to ensure high levels of achievement and attainment for their pupils and students.

The Masters programmes, whilst rooted in scholarship and research, are now co-designed, co-constructed and co-delivered with contemporary school leaders who have a track record of excellence. Our core programmes are the MEd Education Leadership Degree and MA Education (Leadership) pathway. In 2018/19 the School of Education had international students from 20 countries on the Masters programme.
