We have a vacancy for a cell biologist/virologist to further investigate exciting new findings concerning the fundamental biological process of endocytosis. It is long-established that following internalisation, both receptors and pathogens use the changing biochemical environment of maturing endosomes as cues to deliver their cargo to an appropriate cellular location. We have recently shown that potassium ions (K+) work in concert with the acidic pH of maturing endosomes to induce dramatic changes to the molecular architecture of viruses (doi: 10.1074/jbc.AAC119.007718 and doi.org/10.1371/journal.ppat.1006845). These changes permit the interaction of viral proteins with endosomal membranes facilitating viral fusion and genome release. In this project, we will seek to unravel the cellular processes that underpin the establishment of the endosomal K+ gradient and also determine whether endosomal K+ concentration influences the trafficking of cellular proteins, in addition to viruses.
You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in cell biology, virology or a closely allied discipline, with experience in eukaryotic cell culture, molecular biology and cell imaging techniques, as well as a developing publication record in high ranking journals. The successful candidate will join the thriving research environment within the Faculty of Biological Sciences , and have the opportunity to use and gain experience of new state-of-the-art research facilities in cell biology, molecular virology and cell imaging.
