This is an exceptional time to be joining the University of Southampton and its High-Performance Computation (HPC) team within the University's IT department, iSolutions. The HPC team is uniquely placed to support world-class research using one of the largest computational facilities in the UK.

About the Role

This is a role in support of the research being carried out using the University of Southampton's High Performance and Data Intensive Computing (HPDIC) facilities. Following a recent restructure you will be joining a team of dedicated research computing engineers who are supporting the current systems and their use in a diverse range of research topics from Quantum Chemistry simulations and AI modelling to Climate modelling, medical imaging and COVID-19 research.

What you'll do
  • Be part of a team, delivering and maintaining the University's High Performance and Data-Intensive Computing facilities.
  • Proactively, work with a wide range of the University's research community to exploit the full potential of HPDIC.
  • Participate in planning major systems installations and upgrades.
  • Contribute to the support of facility users. For example, assisting with requests and issues, maintaining documentation, and user training.


What you'll bring
  • A mix of system administration and computing skills in a significant research area.
  • Knowledge of high performance and data-intensive computing issues and opportunities. We are looking for a candidate who is enthusiastic about HPC with an interest in learning and applying cutting-edge technology.
  • Experience in working within a large-scale Linux server environment.
  • The ability to present your ideas and your specialist area, to a wide and potentially non-technical audience.
  • Integrity required to work with both commercially sensitive and personally identifiable information.
