ROLE SUMMARY

We are seeking a creative and highly motivated synthetic organic chemist to join Pfizer's Medicine Design, Oncology Medicinal Chemistry Department in La Jolla, CA. As part of this group, the successful applicant will contribute through innovative synthetic chemistry tothedesign and deliveryof clinical candidates aligned with the Oncology Research portfolio.

The Medicinal Chemistry Department is one of many critical disciplines involved in small molecule drug discovery within Medicinal Design at Pfizer with experts in molecular design, synthesis, computational chemistry, structural biology, chemical biology, and analytical chemistry. As a Senior Scientist in Oncology Medicinal Chemistry you will play a vital role as a key contributor of a large, multi-disciplinary matrix team from project inception through to delivery of clinical drug candidates.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Role responsibilities include the ability to contribute to the development and enablement of a coherent synthesis strategy for oncology drug discovery. The candidate must understand the goals and strategies of the project and, as part of the synthesis team, positively and proactively influence the project team through the development of innovative and practical chemistry. The candidate will:
  • Develop and execute innovative and practical synthetic strategies aligned to team goals, including the development of versatile and modular synthetic routes compatible with rapid new target synthesis and efficient scalable routes to preclinical drug candidates
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the lab delivering on team goals
  • Build effective partnerships with other research lines, in particular analytical, pharmaceutical sciences, and technology groups, for the efficient delivery of target molecules
  • Collaborate with project team members to effectively transfer enabled chemistry to contract research chemists and process development where applicable
  • Engage in multi-site medicinal chemistry discussions; prepare and present research results in chemistry and project team meetings
  • Publish and present research internally and externally to Pfizer


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral degree in synthetic organic chemistry with 0-3 years of laboratory-based research or Master's degree with 6-10 years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Highly skilled synthetic chemist in the area of methodology development and multistep synthesis; ability to prioritize and simultaneously execute multiple synthetic options
  • State of the art knowledge of modern synthetic methodologies and techniques related to purification and characterization of organic compounds
  • Expertise in reaction mechanisms and retrosynthetic analysis
  • Proven track record of creative thinking and consistent delivery as demonstrated by publication/presentation records
  • Comfortable working in a highly innovative team environment; possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team of colleagues
  • Previous experience in mentoring and development of junior scientists or students is a plus.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires the ability to carry out experimental organic chemistry in a standard chemical laboratory
