We have an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to develop a project linked to the Health Workforce and Systems Theme with Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust.

Working on an agreed topic, the post-doctoral fellowship role provides post holders with protected research time to plan and deliver research in accordance with the ARC Wessex Theme and/or specified research project under the supervision of the theme lead and/or project lead and undertake learning and development to enable academic career advancement. The opportunities available are aimed at individuals who have the potential to become leaders in applied health research and to provide a platform that supports the preparation of applications to externally funded fellowships/mid-level awards and to prepare peer reviewed publications.

The successful applicant will work on one of the following topics or a self-identified project congruent with the theme & Trust objectives and priorities, as agreed at appointment
  • Measuring demand for nursing care on hospital wards using existing (routine) data
  • Developing and testing an evaluation framework for workforce innovations
  • Using the Safer Nursing Care Tool on acute hospital wards
  • Support for workforce wellbeing and / or staff retention

As a potential candidate, you should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant area (including but not limited to clinical professionals and methodologists / data scientists).You will have quantitative research and skills, with a willingness and flexibility to learn about implementation of research findings as required.

The post is available on a full or part time basis or on a secondment for up to 24 months (although exact terms to be agreed with the successful candidate) and will be based at the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton but the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust. NOTE: The Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex is an organisation funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), with a remit to support applied health and care research that responds to, and meets, the needs of local populations and local health and care systems. The NIHR ARC Wessex is one of 15 ARCs across England, part of a £135 million investment by the NIHR to improve the health and care of patients and the public within nationally.

Our ARC conducts applied health research with the aims to improve outcomes for patients and public; improve quality, delivery and efficiency of health and care services; increase the sustainability of health and care systems locally and nationally, through collaborative partnership. It has four thematic programmes of work: Ageing and Dementia, Healthy Communities, Long Term Condition and Workforce & Health systems. We have a close relationship with our stakeholders within the region, which include a wide range of NHS organisations, local universities, charities, local authorities and others.

You should be willing to travel within the Wessex area, as required, and occasionally further afield within the UK.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
