Research Fellows - SMMI Multi-Disciplinary

The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is a community of researchers from across the University of Southampton, whose interests and research are linked to the marine/maritime realm. By working across the traditional disciplinary divides, we can better address today's global marine and maritime issues that include, but are not restricted to, decarbonisation, climate change, maritime efficiency, the welfare of those who work by or on the oceans, and better protection of marine environments.

The SMMI constitutes world class, authoritative expertise, spanning both the marine and maritime sectors. We foster new research collaborations, educate the next generation of maritime leaders and generate knowledge and intelligence for businesses of all sizes, government at all scales and organisations of all kinds. Alone and with partners we create new technologies and innovations to stimulate economic growth and improve quality of life and the environment.

We have two posts for early career researchers with strong interests in the oceans, the desire to undertake multidisciplinary research and strong digital and communication skills. To be successful you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a marine or maritime background in any discipline eg engineering, physical sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, law, business, arts or humanities. In addition, you will have expertise in multi-parameter environmental accounting (e.g., money, water, CO2, pollution, life) and/or full system evaluations to improve marine and maritime decision making.

You will join a large community of scholars working across the marine and maritime space at the University of Southampton. These are unique opportunities for early career researchers to address key marine or maritime issues.

The role will be initially be awarded for a 2 year period with the opportunity for extension to 3 years dependent upon funding.

There are a great range of benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 30 days plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.
