Background

Applications are invited for an 80% Research Assistant position (start date September 1st 2021) to work at the Centre for Human Brain Health, University of Birmingham. The contract duration is 2 years. The successful candidate will join a research project funded by the Research Council of Norway, aimed at studying the benefits of regular physical exercise for language, cognition and brain health in ageing. This will be done under the direct supervision of Dr. Katrien Segaert (PI), Dr. Sam Lucas (co-I) and Foyzul Rahman (postdoctoral research fellow), and in collaboration with researchers at the University of Agder (Norway).

The candidate will be responsible for performing 12-lead ECG screening tests, exercise stress testing, and the data-collection of physical function tests, questionnaire data and cognitive testing. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the administration of a home-based randomized-controlled exercise intervention program. Specifically, this will include maintaining regular in-person and/or telephone contact with the participants throughout a 6-month intervention period to ensure participants stay motivated and the prescribed exercise instructions are clear, as well as processing heart rate and actigraph data.

The candidate will support other aspects of the wider project where necessary (e.g. support with data-collection of imaging data, recruitment of participants, general administrative tasks) and be involved in preparing results for and contributing to high-quality academic publications, as well as engage in public engagement activities. The candidate will be an active member of the Centre for Human Brain Health, the School of Psychology and the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham.
