The Division of Speech-Language and Hearing Therapy within the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences wishes to appoint an academic with a broad range of clinical experience at Lecturer level. The incumbent will participate in the full range of academic activities associated with offering quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Ongoing engagement in research and development of Divisional research capacity will be embedded in scholarly activities. The incumbent would also be expected to contribute to multilingualism within the Division.

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in language and literacy development and language disorders across the lifespan, including Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC);
  • Clinical supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Active involvement in the development of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching modules;
  • Research supervision in the focus areas of the Division and Faculty;
  • Participating in the teaching, research and community activities, as well as projects of the Division, Department and Faculty;
  • Publication of research;
  • Academic administration and management;
  • Clinical service provision and consultation in relevant clinical areas.

  • A Bachelor-level qualification in Speech-Language Therapy and relevant Master's-level qualification;
  • Registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Speech-Language therapist;
  • At least three years' experience of working as a professional speech-language therapist in the relevant areas; or at least three years' experience of teaching at a Higher A Bachelor-level qualification in Speech-Language Therapy and relevant Master's-level qualification;

Registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Speech-Language therapist;

At least three years' experience of working as a professional speech-language therapist in the relevant areas; or at least three years' experience of teaching at a Higher Education institution; or at least three years' experience as clinical supervisor of students in training;
  • The ability to communicate in more than one South African language;
  • Proven organisational skills;
  • The ability to function well within a team;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office).

  • Relevant experience in teaching and learning;
  • Research experience and good knowledge of research methodology;
  • A PhD, or preparation for a PhD degree in/or related to the field of Speech-Language therapy will be a strong consideration;
  • Publication in a subsidy bearing academic journal or book.
