Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Stellenbosch University offers undergraduate, as well as postgraduate programmes in a number of specialty areas.

We are committed to facilitating the knowledge and skills development of our students to support the safe, competent practices of nursing in local and national contexts. The Department

seeks to appoint an Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer to assist with learning and teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, research and social impact

activities.

  • Providing academic leadership and taking responsibility for the development of nursing education and offered programmes within the frameworks of Stellenbosch University

Providing academic leadership and taking responsibility for the development of nursing education and offered programmes within the frameworks of Stellenbosch University

(SU), the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and the provincial Department of Health (DoH);
  • Facilitating learning, teaching and assessments at undergraduate and postgraduate programme levels in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery;
  • Involvement in curriculum development for the nursing programmes;
  • Clinical supervision, teaching, assessment and accompaniment of undergraduate and postgraduate students as required;
  • Developing and/or presenting short courses relevant to the Department;
  • Involvement in social impact projects as per the departmental portfolio;
  • Participating in departmental and faculty committee structures;
  • Contributing actively to research outputs, including publications in peer-review journals in the Department;
  • Providing research supervision of postgraduate students as per allocation in the Department;
  • Participating and contributing to the internationalisation activities of the Department;
  • Academic administration and management as required in the Department;
  • Quality assurance and risk management for allocated teaching, learning and research modules.


  • PhD in Nursing;
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as Registered Nurse and Midwife;
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Nurse Educator, Assessor and Moderator;
  • At least five (5) years teaching experience with undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes in a Higher Education institution;
  • A track record of successful postgraduate supervision (at least on Masters' level);
  • A track record of quality publications in peer-reviewed, accredited journals;
  • Computer literacy commensurate with research and lecture requirements.


  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision at Doctoral level;
  • Experience and skills to attract research and other funding streams;
  • A postgraduate qualification in any nursing specialisation field;
  • Coaching and mentoring skills;
  • Planning and organisational skills;
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and where appropriate, an international presence and collaboration in his/her discipline;
  • Experience in grantsmanship will be advantageous.
