The supervisors have recently been awarded a new EPSRC grant (EP/V012789/1) titled Towards a revolution in optical communications. In this project, we have invented several approaches not only to enhance the throughput of the optical transmitter but also to investigate novel functional modules within the optical domain that were traditionally done in the electronic domain. The ultimate target of this project is not merely the design and implementation of a high-performance optoelectrical transceiver but to demonstrate the potential for a revolutionary change in short-reach communication links.

Therefore, we are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a background in analogue/RF electronics and photonics to join this project. Ideally, real chip tape-out experience with advanced CMOS process node(16nm/28nm/40nm/65nm) would be helpful, and a deep understanding of high-speed SERDES and clock generators would be desirable. However, if you come from a different background (such as Physics, Computing) and with a strong motivation to challenge yourself in a new research area, you are also welcomed to apply.

To be successful you will have experience in analogue and RF IC and PCB design and the high-speed characterisation of electronic devices and hold a PhD* or equivalent qualifications and experience related to electronics. In addition you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This EPSRC funded project will be supervised by Professor Graham Reed, Dr Li Ke and Professor David Thomson, who have strong, internationally renowned track records in the fields of silicon photonics and integration with CMOS electronics. Furthermore, the project partners will provide strong engagement with both industry (Rockley Photonics, UK) and academia (Peking University, China). The successful candidate will join a team of over 40 researchers focusing on the field of Silicon Photonics, based at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK.

The post will be for up to 3 years in duration due to funding restrictions.

To informally discuss the position, please contact Prof. Graham Reed (Email: g.reed@soton.ac.uk ).
