The role

An MRC funded tissue culture technician position is available to support a grant investigating the role of red blood cell proteins in the mechanism of invasion by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum . The role will require extensive tissue culture (expansion and differentiation) of in vitro derived red blood cells (reticulocytes) from immortalised erythroblast cell lines or primary cells in addition to culture and maintenance of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite lines and purification of invasive schizont stage parasites for invasion assays. The post holder will also be required to provide general assistance in the laboratory. For example, provide assistance for general molecular biology work e.g. cloning, DNA extractions, PCR screening.

What will you be doing?

You will work under the direct supervision of Dr Tim Satchwell within the wider group of Professor Ash Toye. The major responsibilities of the role will involve provision of tissue culture support for the funded project. This will particularly include culture of multiple erythroblast cell lines in parallel, large scale expansion and differentiation of erythroblasts and erythroid cell lines generating in vitro derived red blood cells (reticulocytes) for malaria invasion assays as well as the maintenance of asexual blood stage Plasmodium falciparum and preparation of parasites for these assays. In addition, you will support the project through management of biological stocks obtained or created, ordering of lab consumables relevant to the project, working at and ensuring adherence of tissue culture practices to appropriate safety requirements (Derogated Category 3) and assistance in the day to day running of a shared research laboratory.

You should apply if

You have a background in biological or biomedical science with experience in laboratory research. Previous experience of tissue culture of mammalian cells and/or malaria parasites is desirable but not essential. You will be highly organised, a meticulous record keeper, committed to the project, with excellent time management, communication, and multi-tasking skills. You will need to work collaboratively as part of a team. The funding for this position is 3 years and is available to commence in September 2021.

For informal enquiries please contact Ash Toye ( ash.m.toye@bristol.ac.uk ) or Tim Satchwell ( t.satchwell@bristol.ac.uk ).
